One of the most foolish things I've ever done on a tractor. I guess I was about 14. My Dad and I were doing some hay on a neighbor's farm a few miles down the road. I'd been raking with the D10 and I got done and headed home. Daddy was a few minutes behind me with the other tractor and bailer. I got to the top of this long steep hill, so I thought I'd save a little time and gas and coast to the bottom. I clutched the tractor, and about half way down it was going so fast the front wheels were wobbling back and forth violently. I was really afraid I was going to lose control and wreck the tractor. Then all of a sudden the back wheels locked up and the tractor skidded to a stop. I tried to go on but the tractor wouldn't move. I'd let the clutch out and it would just strain, but not move. I tried to move the gear shifter but it was locked up. So there I sat, stuck in the middle of the road. Daddy got there in a few minutes and asked me what's wrong. I had to come clean and tell him what I did. Needless to say, he was very angry with me. He said, "you can't do that! you're supposed to take 'em out of gear if you do!". He got on the tractor and worked the gear shift back and forth until he freed it. Then he looked at me and said "You almost cost us a lot of money!". Well, the D10 still shifts just find today, so I must not have caused any permanent damage, but I haven't tried to coast a tractor from that day til this one.
