Hi,

I'm in the middle of doing brakes on my '71 170 and was wondering if the oil seal in the differential bearing carrier can be replaced by removing the bolts holding the carrier into the housing, sliding the carrier out, replacing the seal and then reinstalling the carrier?  The manual I have directs you to remove both final drives (I am doing the brakes one side at a time) and the 3pt rockshaft housing to disassemble the diff. Since I am not removing the differential can I take one carrier out at a time to replace the o-ring and oil seal?

Yes you can replace one seal at a time, I'd replace the O-ring on the bearing carrier too.
