 Topic: Help! Bolt stuck in rad

The bolt holding the rad to the frame on my Wd spins and won,t come. Is there any thing I can do other than cutting the head off from underneath. Thanks

Cut it off, and use an insert, in the stripped hole... Least amount of time, for a small problem...

Sounds like the insert for the nut has broken the tack weld or the shoulders have rusted off. If you cant get to the nut with vise grips or the like, just cut off the bolt head with a Dremel tool or the like(die grinder). Then get the rest out in similar fashion. Take your time, and it will benefit you in the long run. Nut inserts can be had from McMaster Carr or other industrial suppliers. You can even tack weld, braze, or solder the new one in place, depending on the base material. Just remember to use a little anti-seize when you put the new bolt in, and you wont have a problem next time. Run into this with all kinds of equipment I work on from day to day.

Thanks. That is exactly what happened. I am going to get some needle nose vice grips tomorrow, but I bet I will have to cut it off. The darn dremmel is so slow. I wish I could get the saws all under there.
I need some better air tools I guess. I guess the dremmel beats a hack saw.

I don"t know about getting that one out, but i had a @#!% of a time trying to get the holes lined up, & bolt started from underneath this past weekend !!!

obvious comment but...
when the rads out inspect and repair ALL the others !!!
You'd feel darn silly telling us, "gee guys as I was installing the rad after fixing that one nut, well, guess what?, ANOTHER........."

I have a die grinder from H F that is one of the most used tools in my shop. It is real handy for projects like this.

Hack saw and a lot of bandaids! First stick all the bandaids to all the sharp edges and then proceed to saw the bolt. Scott

I agree with you there, I have the 'lectric one, from HF, and its great for little jobs, that are too big for a dremel, but to small, fer a torch...

I had one of these that I was able to raise the radiator shell just enough that I could get a sawsall in between the radiator shell and the frame. Depending on how tight this may not be possible. Also nee to be careful that you done damage the shell.
I have had to rebuild a couple of these supports with new steel and new nuts due to rusted sheet metal.
Just and bugger till you get it off!

I can,t believe it but I got it out with needle nose pliers! I went and bought a new set, $34 later, locked them on tight and managed to get the bolt out. Thanks for all of the tips.
