 Topic: WD oil pressure and oil leak questions

Hi everyone, I'm new to the site and tractors. Thank you for all the great information and knowledge you share. I have 2 questions about my 51 WD that I just bought. When I got it the oil pressure gauge wasn't moving. It is an allis chalmers "NORMAL" pressure gauge. I unscrewed the gauge and hit the back side with a little compressed air. The needle freed up. When I put it back on the mount and started the tractor, the needle moved between the "OR" in Normal. When I shut the tractor off, the needle moved back down. Should I still replace the gauge or do you think it's good to go?
Also, the oil pan was leaking in the front and back (curved sides). I haven't noticed it leaking anymore. Is it possible for the oil leak to stop on it's own? Thanks again

I'd keep using it, ORM is about normal, for that vintage of motor. You have to remember the rule of thumb of 10 lbs/1000revs, most that motor puts out would be about 25 PSI.
both probs could just be from a long nap...

sounds like your gauge is working. OR is the normal pressure range and it can run to the N and still be ok. The oil leaks probably will NOT seal themselves. Watch the video on this site about putting a gasket on. A lot of gaskets are put on wrong and leak Bob

Any pressure at all is good. Just beware of low oil pressure being caused by the wrong oil filter.

First WD I had was about 3 lbs. The one I have now is about 6-7 lbs.
Father in laws 45 runs 17 on a new overhaul.
If they don't leak somewhere something is wrong.
Unless it is pouring out I would just use it.

It is allowed to leak for it's age and there is no guarantee that after you replace the gasket that it will not still leak. Any reading you get on the oil pressure gauge means all is well so unless it keeps sticking I would not replace it.

We need pictures! Welcome to the forum! Your doing good! Oil pressure sounds OK. And yes they leak. Sounds like you need to pull the pan and do the gasket thing. Check Dons MO's video on oil pan gasket. I did both mine with out pulling the engines, But as Don will tell you the best way is to pull the engine.

Yeah, when you get old, you'll have some leaks too......take it from someone who knows!  Here is the thread of the oil pan replacement.....how bad is it leaking??
Oil pan Gasket videoAs long as the needle is moving on the oil pressure gauge, it should be good. When you shut it off, does it drop down to the left? There's a LOT of stuff to help you in the following;

Be sure it is the oil pan gasket before you go all out on replacing it.
If the rear main seal leaks, it looks just like the pan gasket is
leaking. If you pull the engine, might consider replacing the crank
seals at the same time.
