I need a little advice. My brother in law bought a farm and inherited a 170 gas and 180 diesel. Bothe tractors run good and have big bush hog loaders. You can tell the previous owner was tough on them and was not on top of maintenance. The question is both tractors jump out of multiple gears. In their condition he is not really wanting to spend $3-4000. I have never done a transmission and I don't feel comfortable tackling it. They are really too nice to scrap but he does want something that looks nice that he is proud of. I think we would be interested in a used trans and rear end that we could swap. He would also be interested in selling or trading for a 6080. Let me know your thoughts or suggestions. We are just not sure which way to go. He's just starting out and doesn't have a lot of money and these would be good tractors for him if they were reliable. Thanks

A couple more questions. Are these transmissions the same or are they different. I know the power directors are different but I have never had one apparat. Also how hard is it to swap transmissions and rear ends. Would we be better getting a whole trans with rear end and final drives all together. I thought I read that the rear end had to be completely disassembled to get the trans apart. Sorry for the rambling and thanks in advance for the help

EXACTLY! Even though it is expensive, rebuilding the transmission and using it properly will provide many years of service long after you stop living. Otherwise you are making a big risk.

I appreciate all the responses and I definately understand the advice to not go with a used transmission. If it were mine it would a different story. But he needs something dependable that he feels comfortable on. I guess he had a trailer load of hay and it jumped out going down hill. Good thing the breaks were workin. And money is a big factor right no. The funny thing is their whole family is green. They have a bunch of two lungers but none are big enough to do the jobs that a 170-185 can do and they are all hand start. And they can't afford newer Deere so they are looking to stay with allis. He really likes our 6080.

I bought a one-eighty a few years back. Jumped out of 4th gear, so gave the guy $1,000 less than originally agreed to. Wrong move. Tried just the shifter forks replacement, then jumped out of third gear.    Spent $5,000 fixing it all up. Be ready to spend if you want to fix the transmission. Granted, when they had it apart, other things were noticed, which probably could have gotten by with, but as it was apart, I went ahead and did the repairs right. Not a cheap deal to fix the trany.

| My personal opinion would be to sell the 170 and use the $$$$ to have the 180 repaired. I think the extra weight and power of the 180 vs 170 will make him the nicer tractor to use. I've never been a big fan of the 6000 series tractors Had a 6080 for about 2 years, sold it and bought a second 180.

I agree with the comment to sell the 170 gas and use the funds to fix the 180 diesel. I was just wondering who is close enough that you could take it to them to go through the transmission.   I haven't worked on a 180 but I think you can split the tractor at the torque tube and then remove the transmission from the rearend without too much trouble.   As to the cost. Hard to say but I tend to spend money fixing what I have instead of buying something I don't know. The other idea would be to look for a 180 or 185 with motor issues and use the one you have as a parts tractor. I highly recommend sticking with the diesel you will be happy with the fuel savings going forward.

FYI, the transmission and rear end became one unit starting with the Series IV d17s. Since the 170 and 180 are direct descendants of this tractor, they too have the one piece transmission/rear end.

The transmission/differential rear end assembly design began in the WD.

If it were me I would sell those old hand start two lungers to an antique tractor collector and use the $$$ to fix the trannys in the ACs.
