Early wide front for the WD |

Michael Crow was over yesterday, he looked at the wide front I have been rebuilding this winter, and noticed it was for the early WD's. It has the front square tube that is two pieces welded together across the length. What I am wondering, is what serial no. tractors could this wide front be correct for? I was going to put it on a 55 WD45, but now it don't look like it will be correct for this tractor. You learn sometimes slowly. Dave.

David, that front would be for a very early WD 3 bolt front end and also correct for the last of the WC's. I know that many 3bolts were fitted with the one piece center piece before the 4 bolt came along. I would certainly not put it on a 45 if I wanted it to be correct. I don't think the parts book differentiates between the center pieces

I believe you would need the late three bolt then or a four bolt. I may have a 54 three bolt for sale (I will know by tommorrow).

What a drag, I disassembles everything and built up every piece and had it turned down, along with new bushings. I guess I will need another tractor now. Oh well all I need then is an early serial number transmission and a WD motor.

Dave, If I looked it up right (out of a old parts book I have) a WD with S/N 59987 and before will be the right tractor for your front end.

3 WD45's with power steering,G,D15 fork lift,D19, W-Speed Patrol, "A" Gleaner with a 330 corn head,"66" combine,roto-baler, and lots of Snap Coupler implements to make them work for their keep.

I gave it some thought over the night,[didn't really loose any sleep], but on a fully restored 45, I think I will go ahead and use that front end. What the heck, it isn't going to be worth anything anyway, so what value will be hurt if it has the wrong front end? I put a lot of work into this project so far. It would be a different story if there were less than a million made. I don't think I have ever seen a really nice restored WD45 sell for anything more than 3500.00 anyway. I will have way more money and time in this than it is worth. It is like when I restored my D-14. It was my first tractor restoration project, and was trying to find out what color it needed to be. All the books I read said that persion orange 2 started at year 1960. What the book failed to tell me was that it was when the 14 ended and the 15 started. So My D-14 is painted the wrong color. I didn't change it, because it looked just fine for tractor drives and such. We all live and learn. You would think as much as I am supposed to know about this stuff by now I would do the research and get things right. Still learning, Dave.

I'm not so sure you couldn't "grind" the weld seam away and use "Bondo" and heavy primer on the top of that axle tube and hide the fact that it was the older one.
