I emailed him and told him I thought they were nice tractors but the market for either one might be closer to $1200- $1500. He responded right away saying thanks but the engine rebuilds alone were $3000 each. I guess his pricing was not a mistake on his part.

I'm putting a PC in my coffin so you can email me what the fellow gets out of them at his estate auction. At that price he will still have them when he passes on to the great beyond.
The word antique has different meanings to some. I have some thousands of years old stones that could qualify to be antique. I can't even give them away. |

Gad - thought maybe the zero on the end of the price was a mistake. Sadly, a full restoration costs a ton of money, especially if you hire shops to do the work.... and you never get your money back. I hope he's successful - our world will have gotten a ton more valuable if he does!

Yep- most guys that have that kind of budget certainly wouldn't need a year or more to get it done... and would've used correct decals.
I believe what's being priced-in, is the cost of HIS estimated labor hours... and when restoring tractors, we all realize that 'sweat equity' is priceless, in BOTH aspects of the term. |

Isn't that kind of what jacked up the prices of the old car market? A few yahoos pay high dollar for a restoration, a few more even less intelligent yahoos with more money then sense pays the first yahoos price and then pretty soon it gets priced out of the working man's budget...

Why pay him that much when you can buy a fencerow special and spend that much in parts and time yourself. Heck, he took all the fun out of those tractors. I mean, when you buy low, ain't that what you are buying? Fun?

Problem is Glenn, you understand the hobby. This guy or maybe his wife waiting to have the kitchen remodeled don't.

I am not sure why anyone would pay that much for a common tractor, a collector item sure.

I'll chaulk it up as he lives on the Cape. Alot down there think that $htt don't smell, ie the Kennedys, and what they have and do is so much better than anybody elses. I'm certianly no expert but shouldn't a 1948 and a 1953 be painted different colors to obtain the best resale price? Again, I could be wrong, but does he really think that an oil leak from a seal can be fixed by using thicker oil? But hey, in the end good luck to him. Edited by Kipn - 13 May 2010 at 9:28am |

A true restore with labor paid at say 50.00/hr I'm sure the cost would rack up quick. I was quoted 2500.00 just to start a paint job on my Farmall H with the finished product more like 3500.00. And that s just the paint. Mind you were talking extremely good work down top the smallest detail but......all this on a 1000.00 tractor when I'm done???? Unforuneatly thats the problem with this hobby. They are actually worth more in the fence row than in the garage or barn. |
