While working on my CA, I found that the spider gears inside the differential had what I would consider excessive clearance.  I did not measure with my dial indicator, and I have more of a car and truck background, so I don't know if it was OK or not.

My service manual mentions selective shims.  I called Sandy Lake, and they are not available.  The side gear shims are available but they do not mention the thickness.  They are $90 each!!  Needless to say without knowing what they are supposed to be, I will not be buying those.

In the mean time, I got to thinking, man these really look like truck shims and cups.  I tore a dana 44 front end I had sitting in the woods apart and the shims are almost exactly the same.  The only difference is that the center hole is about .020-.050 larger.  The cups are exactly the same size and the same amount of dish.  The Dana cups and shims are about .010 thicker if I remember correctly.  Installing the dana 44 cups and shims tightened it up quite a bit.

I thought if anyone else had this problem this may help.

Lynn

on truck rear ends D44s and 60s ETC. we used to cram as many shims in between the side gear and the carrier as possible. kind of a poor mans limited slip. everything was fine the next time we tore it apart. i dont think you can go to tight on a low speed rear like a tractor.
