I am working on variable speed pulley for #32 thrower on my 444 Baler. My stupid question is...does moving the drive belt (from the flywheel) towards the outside of adjustable pulley make the thrower go faster or slower?? I need faster cause I need bales to go farther back in wagon. (Adjusting hand crank no longer functional,so I have to get belt in proper place then lock pulley into place). The more I study the belt/pulley relationship, the more confused I make myself!!thanks friends....Dan

Flywheel is big pulley driving a smaller pulley makes the smaller pulley go faster than big pulley (small pulley rotates more times than big pulley)

Thanks Screwloose, I see what you are saying...but still unsure...the farther out the belt rides on smaller pulley does smaller pulley go faster or slower than if belt was closer into center of smaller pulley ??

The further out on the small pulley would make it slower if it's the driven pulley. If it's the driver than it would make the other pulley go faster. The way you asked the question, I take it that the small pulley is the driven one.
Den (not familiar with the bale throwers so I do not know which end the small pulley is on). Den |

Den, that is correct-small pulley is driven. Large pulley is actually the Baler flywheel. Small pulley is driven by flywheel, and in turn small pulley drives the thrower mechanism. So (since small pulley is variable speed) it would appear that I want belt to ride farther down in small pulley groove to increase thrower speed. I thank you. This clears up my 70 year old boggled mind...thks.Dan
