57 D17 diesel problem

My brother called this evening. He's having problems with his D17 diesel. Late last summer it started blowing water out the overflow. Temp was running 190-200. Got the work finished, then drained and completely flushed system using Napa brand radiator flush. Installed a new thermostat and radiator cap(I believe 7 psi). Tractor had a generic temp gauge setup in it. I purchased a new temp gauge from Norm in illinois. It was a direct replacement and American made etc. Everything installed, put back together earlier this winter. He ran it for a while and all seemed ok. Yesterday he started it, pulled it outside and let it set running high idle(800-900rpm) to warm it up good as he planned to change oil getting ready for spring. It had been running 20 30 minutes and he went to pull it in for oil change. It's blowing water out overflow again. This same problem had occurred about a year earlier and a new radiator cap was installed then. This fall, he checked and had wrong cap. There is absolutely no water in the oil nor any oil in the radiator. What should he check next? We talked about it and believe it might be either a bad head gasket or cracked head. Any checks he should make before pulling head. Any other ideas. Tractor runs great, burns no oil, does not miss, has good power. Just kind of stumped at this point.    PS: Temp was showing 170 degrees as this was occurring. Did not seem overheated nor boiling. Thanks in advance for any help.

	Was this the first time it was run since everything was done? Was the radiator all the way to the top when he capped it off? Just wondering if it was full and once everything got up to temp, and things expanded it puked out what it needed to to get the system where it should be and after this run it will be fine? Just thinking.

	He has worked older Ac's for many years. When he refilled last fall after starting he had let it run with cap off until it had determined it's level. Apparently it had puked quite a lot out today as after shutting it off and pulling cap he couldn't see any fluid in radiator. That would have to be way below seeking it's own level wouldn't it.

	bob...have you cked ur thermostat???also do you have a bad radiator hose.if you had a blown head gasket you should detect it by removing the radiator cap and looking for bubbles.....

	Quite likely a bad head gasket. As few years back my Grand Am was pushing water out the overflow. That was the culprit.

	I would doublecheck the thermostat in a pan of water to eliminate that from the mix of problems. You're right in that he had it up to the right level and now this is something more. Could be a headgasket too, but I have had numerous bad thermostats over the last couple years since all the crap is made overseas now. I had one in a Dodge a couple years back that my nephew and I owned together. He swore it wasn't as he had just put a new one in. He got so ticked off at it, he dragged it over to my place and dumped it on me. Took out the old thermostat, checked it and it wasn't opening decent, put in a new one( that I checked) and end of problems. Edited by ChuckLuedtkeSEWI - 29 Jan 2012 at 10:19pm

	Chuck, I'll have to double check but I think he told me he did check the new thermostat prior to installation. I know that's why he changed it. When checking the original, it wouldn't open until water had been boiling for over five minutes. New one opened well before boiling. JW, will have him check radiator hoses to make sure. I, like all of you have trouble troubleshooting from 1100 miles away. Is there a way to check pressure in radiator?
