Well, if you were cutting the grass or blading with the tractor it might be $40- 50 per hour use... who supplies the operator ? Gas might be $5. hour also ?

If I were you I'd put a murphy switch on it, that kills the engine if oil pressure drops, or temp increases. Auguring grain is often a job that is left in the hands of the low man on the totem pole, and he may not know to check gauges on a set schedule... As to the price, at least $50/hr on the tractor...

50 is what I was going to say. Good grief a electrician, plumber, carpenter. Probably get 40 an hour. Surely a tractor is worth that much.

I get along with my local Co op rather well, and so I'd probably charge em twenty five an hour, and they put gas in it. Darrel

I get along with my local place to. But when I roll in with moisture in my corn, they dock me like everyone else.

Why not barter with the coop? I myself would would only agree to the use of the tractor if I could be in the area while the tractor is in use. Why not for every X hours on use, you get X number of bags of seed corn, or boles of baler twine, or cases of motor oil, etc.

Well, then there's no love lost, so I'd go with the $50/Hour too, unless they have something left in the back that you want. I would probably supervise or use a Murphy Switch, as well. You never know how skilled the operator will be....

They're going out of business? All the more reason to be the operator. If they fry the engine, are they going to be around to repair it?

I got a gadget just for that situation... it's a 3hp electric motor belt driving a transmission with a PTO shaft coupler... roll it over to the auger, run an extension cord from the nearest utility panel, and throw the switch... I've seen guys with air-cooled gas engines with similar setups... roll 'em in place, hook 'em up, and throw the lever... not as worried about tying up or damaging a tractor that way...
but I'd figure out how many hours, and what sort of attendance time and circumstances. If they want you there during certain hours, then you're on a formulated schedule, that takes you away from other opportunities... |

I think $50/ hour is fair. Remember if it gets damaged, all you are going to get out of them is "Sorry"...

I'd call your local Rent-All Co. and ask the total cost for renting a 30 horse tractor per day and or per hour then add your labor cost per hour or per day to man the tractor, add in the fuel per hour and I'd get the money up front per day if they are going out of business. Don't fell bad about getting your money (get cash no checks) up front, you don't know they can or will pay after the grain is moved. One more thing to ask is the number and size of trucks that will be there per day, if it's just two or three tractor/trailers you will be days loading the grain out will two or three trucks per day.
You do what you think is right; if they asked me to do it I'd say no and leave the tractor in the barn to fight my battles on the farm. lol Just remember you don't need the practice running your D14 so don't give the tractor use away.lol |

In my area, The rates that are going at work. A electrician gets, $78, A plumber, $98, A carpenter, $47 to $54 pending the work, rough/finish. For non-union, union is much higher! Just to give ya a idea of what we deal with here! |
