170 engine versus combine engine?

What is differance in a 170 gas engine and the same gas engine from combine? Will they swap out easy? Does governor work the same on them? Thanks Tracy Martin

Tracy, the 170 gas engine is a Z code 8:1 compression 226 engine.  Later E combines and all EIII combines had the same Z code 8:1 226 engine.  The combine engines have an opening for the cam driven mechanical fuel pump that would have to be plated off to use in a tractor.  Combine governors are set to basically idle and high idle at 1600 rpms with not much in between.  So you'd need a tractor governor if you swap.  I'm not sure about the E but the EIII uses electrical sending units for the gauges.  Not sure if the 170 still had mechanical ones or not.  Also I think the combine front pulley is specific to it so you'd want to keep the tractor pulley.  But in general it should bolt right up.

Mike, my One Seventy has electrical gages. I bought a 170 that has what appears to be a combine engine in it.Block looks like early One Seventy with delete for fuel pump. I didn't really see any other changes that stuck out.  I think governor needs adjusting or replacing. Not sure what the internals look like between the two engines. Thought someone that has swapped them could tell me. Hopefully someone will chime in and get me headed in right direction.Thanks Tracy Martin

Tracy - the internals on the governor?  Yeah I haven't had them apart so other than studying the parts books I couldn't tell you the specifics.  Mike

Never looked at the E set-up to see how it worked.....the gov weights are shaped different on the ramp.Odd thing is you can have one of each on shaft against brg and they both contact the brg through their travel.Looking at them you wouldn't think they could. I had E wieghts in my 45 for over 25 yrs. A liitle jumpy in certain situations but no real problems generally.Put stockers back in 2yrs at O/H.
  My A2 (230-6) had a limiting speed gov and the throttle cable worked the butterfly on carb.It wanted to run at high idle always and you were just manually slowing rpm by forcing butterfly closed. At part throttle there was no "govenor action".
