In a few weeks. I'm getting the cheapo paint from tisco. I am going to use hardner in the paint. The paint is alkyd enamel. Tisco sells clear coat that is acrylic lacquer. The guy on the phone at tisco says that the clear coat is compatible with the enamel. I guess I'll read the cans when I get them to make sure before I use it. Assuming that it is compatible how long after i spray the enamel should i wait before I spray this acrylic lacquer clear coat? Thanks for first hand experience recommendations.

Try it on a test panel. Even a cardboard box will work. You can put enamel over lacquer but most paints I have used will not work the other way. I suppose it could be some type of modified lacquer but I would be skeptical. Lacquer is the working ingredient in paint stripper.

Do yourself a favour and head to a proper auto paint supply place. Nowadays they make a real good 'single stage'(paint + clear) system that is 100% compatible. Having a faceless 'guy' over the phone say 'yeah it'll work' is NOT a good idea unless you can get a hold of him and get him to strip off HIS mess, re prime and repaint the whole tractor!
You probably have spent 50-100 hours 'prepping' the tractor(or more !!) WHY destroy it in 20 minutes? I know REAL paints cost a bit more BUT what is YOUR time worth!!! Also be sure there are NO oil leaks ! Run and drive it for 2-3 days,be sure to spin the PTO,use hydraulics , etc. ANY oil leak, even an itty bitty one will show up BIG TIME once the paint's put on. I'm no expert,,,but I DON'T think you can spray lacquer over Enamel without the emanel lifting or bubbling and ruin a paint job and there goes the money you "saved",,, If you're lookin for some economical paint go to Tractor Supply and check out their paint. I used it on my tractor and am very pleased with the results and the Hardner is made for their paint,, GOOD LUCK,,,, ![]() |
