 Topic: Cork Gaskets

I have a number of cork gaskets for the final drive pan on a "C". They are old and over the years they have shrunk and no longer fit. Is there anything I can do to get them to expand?

Put them in a shallow pan of steaming water. It might sound stupid (that's what I thought anyway) but it will soften them up. I had NOS valve cover gaskets for a 318, 65 Dodge Dartand they worked great after steaming.

I've used that same trick to get old "shrunk cork gaskets soft and back to size. Even floating them in a pan of very hot water will work. For large ones, I've even soaked them in very hot water in the bath tub when no one was looking!!

Always did that back in the 50/60 with cork gaskets , soak and install . Transmission pan gaskets were bad for shrinking and that was before they added neoprene to the cork like many valve cover gaskets did later.

Phil I have heard of the little yellow rubber duckies in the bath tub, but never cork gaskets.  Ummm, not too sure about your habits lol.
