I have looked at the AGCO book and found the following:
74050179 : Spring, governor control
74048624 : Spring, governor linkage
74049533 : Spring, Idling
74054598 : Spring, advance, outer
74051502 : Spring, Metering valve
Which one of these springs are you guys always talking about to get a few more RPM's?

A 70226785 spring is a 170 or 175 allis spring --put on my d-17 226 gas it now will turn 2100-2200 rpm . Picked this spring up at a Agco dealer .

Ted, none of those numbers are for a D17 gas engine. Correct governor spring for a D17 gas is 70229519 and will get you 2000+ rpm with a properly adjusted governor and carburator on a stock WD45. A 70226785 spring is from a 170 or 175 and will get you LESS rpm(1800 to 1850) than a 70229519 on the same properly adjusted engine. Anyone who tells you different, hasn't ever tried the two different springs on the same properly adjusted engine.

Why didn't they run these engines any faster and is there an significant decrease in engine life?

The Summer of 1967 they actually did on the first 50 model One-Eighty gas tractors. They were set at 2200 RPM high idle and 49 of them had vibration issues (made your feet go to sleep after hrs of operation) so they were retrofitted with six cylinder model 2500 engines as the fix. To successfully be operated smoothly at the higher speeds, the engine would have needed a balancer of some sort in the crankcase or maybe a counterbalanced crankshaft.
