My 37 WC (no traction release lever) stopped driving the rear wheels a couple of days ago.
I have been hearing some clunking sounds when letting out the clutch recently and Thursday I had it in the woods and stopped the tractor to do some wood cutting. When I started it up, it would not move. Observations: 1. No odd noises from the drive train while towing it to the barn 2. took the cover off the torque tube, started the tractor and watched the drive shaft turn when I released the clutch pedal (Wheels on the ground) 3. Blocked the frame of the tractor up so the wheels are off the ground and repeated the test in (2). Same results no wheels turning. 4. Shut the tractor off and rotated the wheels by hand and the drive shaft would turn. Obviously it seems to me that the connection fault is in the rear end but I would like someone who has been into one to suggest whether I should remove the rear end and check the differential or should I start on the final drive end of the system? I don't understand how the drive shaft in the torque tube would turn by turning the wheels by hand when the transmission won't turn the wheels. (Unliess it is a matter of the resistance to rotation because of the difference caused by the weight of the wheels . Please someone give me some advice here, Thanks, Dave |

Sounds like you need to unbolt the frame rails from the rear end and roll it apart. Then you can remove the tube and pinion shaft and have a look inside the differential.

What happens when you prevent the shaft from turning in the torque tube with the wheels off the ground and turn buy hand? Can you feel or hear anything? Or is everything tight?
