My mom's dad and my dad's dad both farmed. I thought, how cool would it be to have a tractor from BOTH grand dad's? Well, the folks that know have since passed and took the info with them, so I am unable to find a tractor from both sides of the family. I was fortunate  to have the owner of this WD come asking if we wanted grand dad's old tractor back. And it had been gone since 1964.

I've got a John Deere model 60 that I'm going to have to sell to make room for the WD. I keep thinking somewhere, there's a family that this 60 belongs to, but how I would ever find them is beyond me. I'm betting there are TONS  of folks that wish they could find the family tractor and can't. And I bet some of those tractors are probably right next door and don't know about it.

How great an idea it would be to start up a site that tractor owners could go to sell, and family members could go look? It would be great for both worlds. Sellers could get a premium price and lookers would get grand dad's old tractor back. What do you think? I guess the biggest problem would be to identify, "is that the same tractor?" I would think that until very recently, (since Al Gore invented the internet), tractors haven't moved across country much since they were delivered to the dealership. I would bet my JD 60 has lived in the same county all it's life, or close to it. Any thoughts?

You can tell something that you've owned. You just can. I saw our old Chevrolet truck today- I haven't seen it for 8-10 years. Instantly, I knew that it was our old truck.

The largest problem that I could see would be with the names. Not everyone wants their names out there, but more commonly, misspellings could wreak havoc.

I'd think that it would be neat- at least in a regional sense. A nationwide site would balloon out too quickly.

The registry is only helpful if you know who owns the tractor or know the serial number. My grandfather sold out in 1989 and there are a couple tractors I would love to find again but I have no clue on the serial numbers.

I think this is a neat idea Les.
Need someone smarter than me to figure out how to do it. Might start out with:

"Tractor Search"

-I am looking for a Allis WD45 (year built) __  that was last known to have been near the town of ______
in ______ County, State  _____
-It had been owned by the following families last being mr. xxxxxxx, prior was mr. cccccccc
-Year last seen 1998
-Description; 1955 Allis Chalmers W45 Wide front no power steering.
-Serial Number : Unknown or WD12345
-Distinguishing features: Had a replacement gas tank after the fire. Very well worn:) My butt marks on the tool box from when I was a kid:) Makes a distinctive clanging sound when you step on the drawbar.
-Small finders fee.
Regards,
 Chris

Well let's try it. My Dad had a 1961 D19 deisel. Snap coupler, 16.9 34 spin outs. Sold it in probably 1988-1992. I think it went to Henderson implement in Clayton In. Just west of Indinapolis. If you have it. I'd like to have it back. Go

I posted an ad in the local newspaper looking for a John Deere B last owned by Mr. xyz who died 5 years ago, but no word yet.

I guess I'll try this too. Dad had a '57 WD 45 narrow front with factory power steering. When I was about 11 or 12 I thought his tractors would look better if the wheel centers were painted cream color like the D Series of the time. So he said go ahead and paint them. The 45 had two sets of rear wheel weights which of course I didn't want to take off to paint separately since they would have probably fell on me and killed me and I wouldn't be writing this now... Anyway he quit farming in about 1970 and all the equipment was sold. Fast forward to about 2004 or 2005 when the Gathering of the Orange was in Jacksonville, IL. and I noticed a 45 setting across the street from the show grounds. It was a late WD 45 with factory PS and the wheels had been painted cream with wheel weights on them at the time. The weights were now gone but you could tell they had been there when the wheels were brush painted by some kid many years before. Here are a couple of pictures of it as it sat there in Jacksonville. I called the phone number on a truck setting on the same lot and talked to the guy that owned the truck and the tractor. He said he had sold the WD 45 to some one in New York state but didn't have the guy's phone number and it was going to be picked up soon. At the time I wasn't on this forum so I didn't think I could track down the new owner and didn't follow up on it, but now I wish I had. Anybody from New York state (or elsewhere) ever see a 45 like this or know what might have happened to it. (Sorry for the long post.)

There is no one way to go about finding old tractors .The guy that would have what I wanted would be the guy that dose read the news paper or have internet. A lot of older dealer never even put serial #'s on bill of sales or even made a bill of sell just sold it for cash (no paper trail).A guy that restored a old tractor changed wheel's , rims ,etc. that you could see that would help I.D. with out serial .

If you do not try ,you do not get . GO for the website get website built and see what happens .Sure would be something to try .

I would suggest that someone get the domain name, Lost Tractor or losttractors.com
doesn't seem to be a site like that yet.
Build a form to fill out.
ability to add pictures.

Our son Adam builds web sites, if that would help? Not sure what the cost would be? I can check with him if you want?

Just some thoughts. I see another post where some one was looking for a 7040.

That'd be great. Ask your son and see what he thinks. Also, if it's going to be a costly maneuver, there should be something to be made for covering the costs. Kinda like maintaining this site. But if it's going to be non profit, well, see what he thinks about "donating" his services. I know it costs me a $100-$200 a year to keep my website up. Maybe Finddadstractor.com?

Well I tracked down Grand dad's John Deere B. It became a donor tractor and was parted out. Cry The guy needed the rims and the rest was reduced to scrap. Not the result I was lookin for, but I'm guilty as well, as I've dismantled a 48WD into a pile that will never be a running unit again that surely belonged to someone.

I also tracked down where this 1952 John Deere model 60 came from that I'm going to sell. I tracked it as far as to a farm auction near Missouri Valley, Iowa. Haven't given up yet, but the trail may end there.
I still gots my A/C but it's clear out in the barn now.

Les,
Nice work tracking down the tractor information.
I have also reduced a AC WD to a pile of parts, but it is helping keep three others alive.

I have a 47 WC I bought from the Original Owners son that I borrowed parts from. It had sat our for many years B4 I got it though and there was no other family interested. It's too bad cause I hauled home a WD from the same place that I think is in TOO good of condition to part out. The engine has had a piston and rod missing since the late 60's when the guy pulled with it.
