Hi, New member, working on my 40th tractor, this one is a 1963 d17 series 111, and up front I got a lot to learn. My question is about the Power Director clutch. Have a problem with adjustment,no matter where handle is it wants to go,has not a neutral, tring to read about adjustment, never done it, if that is my problem, any help would help, thanks.

Someone could have tried to pull some shims out of clutch pack and didn't know that they need to put them back in the center of pack to keep overall thickness

 If it is not up to operating temp. it will want to go when in neutral.

Thanks, will be 15 below 0 in morning, temps not above single digets excpt today, so have been concerned of hurting the cluches by running it till warmer. Levers won"t hold in place but do some when warmer, maybe just have not warmed up enough?

The neutral position will always creep when the oil is COLD! You do not need to take it apart! You will not hurt the clutches by running it in cold weather either. The power director clutch runs in oil and is one of the most reliable range changers on the market. NONE of my tractors have ever been touched.
Put it to work for a good hour so that the oil warms up - it will not move as much in the neutral position. If it still moves a lot at that time, the position of the hand clutch can be adjusted to help minimize movement (without taking anything apart). IF the lever jumps out of high range, just remove some washers from the stop bolt that is near the shaft.

Thanks, will certainly try this, may wait for a warmer day than today, weatherman says up to 32 degrees this coming weekend for 3 or 4 days. Hope this d17 turns out to be as nice a tractor as my d14 has been. Thanks again. LJDOC

Hi again. Have been working on carb and electrical on d17, got engine running good today, Now to the Power Director Clutch, Not knowing what the previous owner put in the clutch for oil, checking it it is a thick milky color, looks like maybe hydrolic. Want to change it and filter but not sure what the best to put in it, so that is my question for today, what is the best oil to fill it with?

Non detergent 20w was the original spec but can be hard to come by. Try aw32 hydraulic oil

I found 20w at TSC. This is the oil I use in oil bath air cleaners.
