I have an old Allis Chalmer I need to identify. I have no info. on this tractor, but would like to get it running. I got some numbers off of it and they are SW-35787 and maybe a DL15S? Any help would be appreciated.

D17 series 3 or 4 with the oval muffler. If the hyd pump is in the belt pulley its a series 4

Looks like a Model D-17, built from 1957 to 1967, replaced the WD-45.

Serial number should be on the flat spot of the torque tube here (red circle) starting with a D17 followed by the numbers...

The ignition switch is gone. Any idea how to bypass the key switch to see if I can get it running before I dump any real money into it? How about a wiring diagram?

Hot wire it, i.e. run a wire from the battery to the coil and have at it.

To the coil primary terminal not hooked to the distributor.
Then you'll need some way to power the starter, probably another wire from battery temporarily to starter solenoid unless it has a directly operated switch like WC and WD. Rednecks would jump the starter solenoid posts (if on the starter) with a big screwdriver. Those that remember to put the tractor out of gear usually survive. A few that scramble fast don't get run over but have to chase down the tractor or wait for it to run out of gas. Gerald J. |

The D17, has a starter solenoid behind the back of the block, under the battery tray, next to the air cleaner. I think it would be just fine to find a 15.00 key switch, you will only need to hook up three wires to test if it runs. Which I am sure it won't, the carb will be full of varnish, and the points will need to be filed at the least. The very first thing I would do is see if the engine is still loose, can you turn it over, by grabbing the fan blade, and using the other hand to keep the belt tight?

I can turn the engine by hand. I even jumped the starter and it did turn the engine. I was using a small wire, so I didn't turn it much. Just enough to see if the motor was locked up. What would you suggest i do first? Should I just remove carb and have cleaned?

I keep a small plastic gastank in the shop for ocasions like this. You can open the drain plug in the bottom of the carb and let gas run through until clean and fresh and try it.
