Friend of mine has a 385 that he doesn't like but I have used it and think it works great. So I guess it's a matter of opinion.
Hope that helps, Denis |

what doesn't he like about it? the one i looked at (dunno how old it is) was pretty dirty, showed some wear in the paint, however it looks like it was shedded, the monitor is with it, but looks real dirty too! dunno what # the planter is, it's a 6-30 pull type.

It would be a 385. good planter for spacing . Good planter for depth control. Bad ,air runs off of the electrical system of the tractor. We used one for a long time. There a good planter, just not as easy to use as a kinze, fingerpickup. You need to have the right seed plates. The Landolls had some issue fixed. They made the planting mechanizm cast aluminum, instead of plastic.

I had one, loved it! Had Whites before that one, so I had a bigger alternator already on my 7000. Never had any issues other than the stainless wear plates and plastic seals in the seed boxes wearing. Replaced them and was good as new. I still think it outplanted red, green, and blues ones in their day. I would get another, but don't need one with only 5 acres of corn. Easier to use my neighbors!!!! But I still wish I hadn't sold it on my sale!
Do over thingys, items to keep:
75 IHC grain truck
385 planter
7000 AC
Long backhoe
7060, maybe

no Michael, this one is on an auction this saturday near me. they have an AC planter too which i'm going to buy! as i want it for parts! i've had; JD, IH, Kinze, Buffalo, AC, Oliver planters thru the years, always went back to using the old AC planters...more accurate and simple to use/work on if needed! only takes about an hour to get the planter ready to plant each spring, compared to days on Kinze and JD planters! currently running a 6-30 pull type, but also have an 8-38 3 pt AC planter too. both plate type which i like, do have a 4-row air that i used for parts. mostly the furrow opening disks and the seed boxes.

Not to defend Deere but Dad had a 7000 planter it didn't take long to get ready or switch from corn to beans. I have an Allis now and like how it plants but setting depth is much easier on a 7000. Never ran a 385 though would like to get one some day soon. Maybe a 12 row if I can find a good one nearby.

Get a Deere. The are almost idiot proof and do a very good job. I struggle to see how they take anymore time to get ready than anything esle. I'm not a Deere fan but you can't beat there planters. Everyone has a strong point and planters where Deere's not Allis's. We planted 750 acres last year with no real issues between our two Deere's. Deere must have out sold Allis by about 50 to 1 on planters and that had to be for a reason.

A 7000 series or newer Deere or a Kinze are hard to beat. I have used AC planters and still have an AC 2/3 row replant planter. The ground driven AC's just aren't as good at depth control or as accurate at spacing. I don't know about the air/vacumn planters. Deere had a pretty good planter back then.

We have a 385. Ok planter now after installing new Landoll cast aluminum units instead of the original plastic. I like the quadra disk design and that is why I purchased this planter. I installed a second John Blue pop up fertilizer system so the fertilizer transmission is driving 2 pumps. Easy to do. Hardest thing for me is consistent depth control but i don't have beaucoup money involved and get ok spacing. My 2 cents.
