I would like to thank DrAllis and others on suggesting that the reason for the "low level skipping" on my fathers tractor was due to the timing being off.
A few weeks ago, I set the timing at full throttle, 25 BTDC and it runs great without the skip. Lots of power! And the timing was way off before I adjusted it. We have a Schwartz loader on it and I had to drop the frame on it a bit in order to get a clear shot at the timing hole. But one more issue maybe you all could help me with: after running it hot for a while, even if we let it idle for say, 30 seconds, the tractor diesels when you shut the engine off. Any thoughts on what could be the cause? I do know though that the distributor has a bit of slop in the shaft. Thanks for your advice. |

If the idle speed is truly set where it belongs (400 to 500 rpm and that is slow) a D17 with standard pistons and sleeves shouldn't diesel ever. Maybe cheap gas?? lots of carbon on the valves or piston tops?? too hot of spark plug (AC Delco 44 XL is fine) ? |
