I pulled the axle out of my wc last night and it is just covered with sludge on the inside. What is a good way to clean this out? My thought was to drain the differential and flush some mineral spirits through the ends of the axle housing a few times. Any other ideas?
 
Also when I prepare to paint, there is quite a bit of grease that wont come off with the pressure washer. If I scrub what I can off and sandblast, will the sand take off the oil or will it push it into the metal?

I use kerosene.....mine was sludged when I drained it too. When you prep for paint, wash with either oven cleaner, or comet....neither will affect paint. I always wipe with laquar thinner too.

Electrolysis works if you have a little time. It will remove old paint and rust also.

Some say,"I don't have a container big enough" Just dig a hole in the ground or build a wooden box and line with plastic. Lots of old lawn mower blades help:)
