Plumbed in a pressure guage yesterday on my D19.   I brazed a nipple onto the pressure line right in front of the carb and then plumbed in a pressure guage and started testing it.  The  IT manual says the pressure should be around 1000-1250 when you turn it all the way from one side to the other.   I ran it at full rpm and the most I got was around 5-600 lbs.   Tried adding a washer behind the shims on the relief valve and it was less.   Tried removing some shims and it was less.   The most I got it to read was with the factory amount of shims in the cap for the pressure relief valve.   I did also drain all the old fluid and put in new ATF as that is what was recomended in the manual before I tested it.  It does turn but it's not very smooth and sometimes you can feel the power steering pulsating as you're turning it one way or the other.   Any other recommendations of things I should look for before thinking about taking the pump apart.   Right now I got a narrow front that is coming hopefully next week.  I am going to wait on tearing it down until I get the wide front off and try it with the narrow front on.  I did make sure the wide front was all greased up but I don't know how worn the bushings are in the front end, so I don't know how much resistance is hurting me also.     Just wanting to hear any of the experts opinions as to what all may or may not be wrong, or what else to check.

Just a thought, but maybe you have a control valve issue. My D17D had a few "dead spots" in it when turning. When I had it all apart to overhaul, I could not believe the amount of crud in the housing. When I took the valve out to reseal it, I did find a small amount of dirt in it. Cleaning and resealing was all it needed. The steering shaft has to slide in and out a little to actuate the valve. A little bit of dirt might be keeping the shaft and valve from moving. The D17 and D19 have the same basic steering pedestal in front.

You could be right Brian.   When I drained out the old fluid that was topped off after I fixed the hole in the pressure line, it was really milking and nasty looking.   I think when I go to switch out front ends, I was going to pull the bolster off anyways and tackle the front main seal on the engine as that is leaking a little also.    So while I have it torn down that far, I will probably do what you are talking about and take that apart and see what I can find.
