 Topic: PTO side delivery rake hauling questions.

Has anyone hauled a PTO side delivery rake (or has one) and can give me some pointers? I'm looking at picking one up just east of DeMoine IA and hauling it back to northern Illinois. I have a 80" wide by 18' long trailer and was wondering if if would load ok. I was thinking about putting the reel all the way over against the drivers side of the trailer and running the tongue over to the right i'm just not sure how long the tongue is from the back of the rake to the end of the tongue. From the pictures I have of it it doesn't look like it would be easy to pull the tongue off. I did that to bring a couple of rotobalers home but it looks like if you pull the tongue off the rake the wheels would come with it.

When I brought my grain drill home I did the same the tongue stuck over about a foot. If that is a problem you could riase it up in the air and block it so it fits in the rails

I hauled a 77G rake on a car trailer without any problem. I set it on at an angle. Wheels toward the front. Let the excess carriage hang over on the passenger side. So that the carriage and teeth wouldn't be riding on the floor of the trailer, I put some blocks under the tongue to hold it up. Make sure you bring enough straps to support the tongue in the position you want to hold it and enough chains and binders to tie it down. Perhaps even nail the blocks down to the trailer floor so they don't slip. It can be done. Dave

I hauled this rake over two hundred mile on a trailer just like yours, I set it on side ways and let the tongue hang over on the right side of trailer about a foot.

Oh, that rake Don has pictured is probably wider than my 77G I hauled, but I agree, it should also haul ok.

As others have posted above, a foot or two hanging over on the passenger side probably won't raise any eyebrows. Might put a red rag on it to show you gave it some thought before departure. When hauling the old high steel wheel grain drills, I have chained the tongue up in the air to avoid the overhang on the side. Just have to take some time to get the chains where they won't come loose on the trip home.
