Since seeing
Fred Wilke's 125 PU on a trailer built from an Allcrop tongue I have wanted to
build one. I used rectangular tubing for the axle, used some old B spindles to
get wheel bearings instead of bushings, and modified the tongue so it was square
with the world instead of offset as they are on combines. I added a couple of
cross supports to bolt the PU on with three bolts, and that was pretty much
it.

That is so cool, except will it be stable if you're running something with the power unit?

Looks real nice and I mean nothing negative in my critique, I just don't want to see anything or anyone hurt or damaged.
Aren't those low speed rims and tires? You said you replaced the bearings and thats a good start, but I bet those tires won't take much speed without coming apart and that could have bad results on the interstate on the way to a show if the narrow wheel base flips it over. Also the 2 bolts in the hitch from the tongue is a weak joint. The light hitch isn't designed to support any applied load with only the top 2 bolts in place.

I agree with the concern on driving this thing on the road. If you see this thing running down the highway behind a pick up it's because sombody stole it! Had that been my intent I would have made the axle wider, the PU lower, the tongue longer and used car spindles/wheels/tires. I do expect to pull it behind a tractor. Running it under load is a valid concern as well. If I would run anything with the PU I'd leave it hitched to the tractor. I actually don't know how it would react under load. The intent was to have a way to easily manuver a PU using as many AC parts as possible.
As for the hitch, there's a piece under the ball receiver shaped like an upside down "U" to give it strength that's 1/4" thick. (It's actually the top half of the excess 2"x3"x1/4" axle tubing that fit snugly inside, sandwiching the ball receiver between it and the 1/2" flat steel trailer hitch) It would never be strong enough without it. I also have an AC ball hitch as well that I may well use. DaveinGreenBay, I sometimes surprise myself with what I get done between meals. I never miss a meal!

I'm glad you have more thought into it than what it appeared Don't judge a book by it's cover and such. As good as it looks I would hate to see anything negative happen to it or you.

I have great concerns about Safety.
How high can you lift the tongue before the whole thing suddenly flips over backwards? The high 'centre of gravity' will be a problem. I just see an accident waiting to happen ! Gary
