Got started on the neighbors D17 today giving it a full tune up. Started straightening the wiring out some. I wrote down the serial number then looked it up about 5 minutes ago when I got home. Numbers show that it is a 1960 D17.
This got me to wondering did the D17 have the full flow oil system in 1960? If not then the engine has been changed b/c this one has full flow. Engine number is 17-2300-M Thanks for any help. Edited by 79fordblake - 13 Dec 2011 at 5:07pm |

That is a very low engine serial number that I would think should have the bypass system on it. Please post a picture!

Full-flow oiling system on gasoline engines happened at sn 24001, which was later 1959.......engine number must be 23000 not 2300..... |

By the time your tractor was built, there were already 21,362 gas D17's built. I think the engine serial numbers began 17-1001 and went up from there. so your eng serial number should be at least 22,362....remember, other D17 engines were being built for other uses all while they were being put in the tractors.

So if I look again tomorrow and the number actually is 2300.....the engine was originally in something else? |

NO......17-2300-M would have to be old block oiling system, which is a different block. Now, I suppose it could be an old block that someone (like myself) could have converted over to Full-Flow oiling, but if that was the case, where the lower oil line comes out of the block, there would be a Hex plug (1 1/8" wrench size) that has been drilled-tapped-threaded to accept the 90 degree brass elbow. If that's the case it isn't the original block if it has this hex plug.

Here is a link to a video if the engine in my dad's Gleaner E. It is of course a 226 engine with the full flow system on it. If you pause the video at the 26 second mark, you get a good view of the oil line set up. You can see the two large oil tubes coming from the block up to the oil filter (the lower tube is oily and hard to see). On a bypass oil system, there is only one small tube and there will be a large bolt head on the side of the block near the dipstick which is where you can access the oil pressure relief valve. In the bypass system, the relief valve is integral with the oil pump.
The two tubes on the full flow system are for oil to flow to the filter and then back to the engine internals. On the bypass system, the tube is for a portion of the oil to flow to the filter and that oil then flows back to the sump through the bracket holding the filter and through a hole in the block.
