i got a friend that has a 180 that that locked up a year or two ago and they finally got the motor out and found a crank bearing out. they told me that a complete rebuild is over $3000 does that seem right to you guys? seems way to high of a price to me. if any one sells them on here give me a price on it i would like to help my friend out if i can.
 thanks allis6080

you mean rebuild KIT? that is very spendy, unless a crank is included.

thats very true burgie. i was looking at prices on tisco web sit they had a kit  for $2000 but that included head rebuild which isnt needed cause they just had the pump, injectors, and head rebuilt be for it locked up. i know that some kits are pricey when they told me the price iwas shocked. cause they are not really tractor ppl. and dont know much about them or where to get parts
i just dont want them to be getting taken advantage of by some one

You need to compare apple to apple orange to orange. Did this include labor or just parts. Was it dealer retail price  to someone stumbling in the front door? looking into doing my 200 this winter and so far finding kits including everything and valves and head parts for 1400 to 1500.

That's about right for the cost of a rebuild kit.  You'd probably need to regrind the crank, though.  Take a look at the crankshaft while you have the engine apart. Don't order the kit until you know what sized bearings you will need.  Check the camshaft too. I'd have the injectors rebuilt and the injection pump looked at as well.  If you can do all the work yourself, except the regrind, I'd think you could come in at around $2000 for a rebuild.

dan
that was just for parts i think some one was feeding them a big line or just a miss understanding.
doug
they are going to regrind the crank. but after they heard the $3000 from someone they said they would just get oversized bearings to match crank after the grind job. im just trying to get them to do the rebuild while they are this far into it (it only makes sence to) and its not going to cost $3000 for the parts to do it.as far as injectors and pump they only have a few hours on them since they were rebuilt. they even said there was a little water in oil but they just want to run it and see what happens if they do that then im done helping them out and when it really blows i'll offer them scrap price for it. see what they say about that! lol!

You'd better tear it all down first before ordering ANY parts. Your crankshaft just may be junk after a bearing burn-out, and you may need to align bore the block or may need a connecting rod or two.

You can get a "remaned" long block 301 on E-bay for $3,550. My only problem with their listing is they tell you the parts were replaced or remachined "as needed." At the very least I'd like to know that the sleeves, pistons, rings and bearings have been replaced. Ditto for the valves, valve springs and valve guides. As for their workmanship, I have no idea.
