Need some help guys....I got a broken brake rod on an early D17. The problem lies in where the rod broke, just inside the brake housing. Do the brake bands come out the top inspection hole, or do I have to take the whole side of the tractor apart to get to it. If they do, what's the easiest way to get it all apart, fix the problem and reassemble the entire apparatus?

Brad, You take the brakes out of the top of the hole where the cover is,but you have to get that dang bottom pin out first! Rick

Also that front shoe might be a bitch to get out if it broke long enough so it won't pass by the drum and housing

How does the bottom pin come out...does it have to slide out towards the tire, as in having to be pulled out?

Yes in bolt the keeper bolt and prey that the pin will slide out I made a slide hammer puller. Others have used other methods

Those pins can be a real b*****d to get out. On mine, I welded a bolt to the head of the pin, slipped a deep well socket over it, and pulled with a nut and flat washer.
