The last set of decals I used were the old water transfer type.  Now I see vinyl, cut vinyl, mylar, etc.  What is the preferred type?

Please explain why cut vinyl is better.  I have never used and would like to understand how it differs from the others.  Thanks.

The vinyl ones are like you used to get. Mylar ones are cheaper and will have a clear film between the letters. You can still use water to install them that way you can move them a little to line everything up. I bought a set from Maple-Hunter Decals for a 185 AC this year and they were nice.

What kind are the ones that are on an applicator backing paper, don't require water, and don't have the material between the letters?  Seems like I've heard claims that these look the cleanest (maybe not the most original) and are easy to apply - just line up, press on and remove backing paper.

Vinyl have a front and back material that let you tape your decal in place so you can get it where you want it, IE (square, level, distance Left to Right) than you peal off the back and smooth down the letters to get out air bubbles ect, than you remove protective cover film. All you have our the letters with no clear film around them. When the paint fades on a tractor and you have used Mylar the paint doesn't fad under the clear and your decals look bad.

David's pretty much nailed it.  We do carry both vinyl and mylar because our customers ask for them.
Mylar is a clear sticker with the ink on the sticky side.  1 big sticker for all letters.  as David said, the vinyl are each individually cut and layered to get the correct combination.  They cut them from the backing and "blank" or remove all waste vinyl.  Then a frisking paper is applied.  It's like a low-tack masking tape.  You pull the frisking paper and it lifts the decals from the backing.  Then lay it down on the surface.  Burnish down through the frisking paper, and then pull the fisking paper off, leaving the decals in place.
Vinyl will be thicker than factory, but it's the closest we have outside of the original liquid soluable (water slide from your model building days) decals.
I have some customers that went so far as to paint the markings on instead of any type of decal.  Done right, it's the closest to original, but requires a good painter and a thick checkbook.
JimD
Oh, and David is correct, when using the mylar with a cheap paint, the paint will fade faster away from the decal, but with a quality paint you will not have that problem, but a slightly more shiney surface where the decal is.

David and JimD, thank you for the explanation.  Sounds like cut vinyl is the way to go.
