Hey Guys,
Hopefully someone on here will be able to diagnose this. When I was using my CA this past summer I noticed it always makes a howling noise when I would let off on either the foot clutch or the hand clutch BUT it only did it in 4th gear. At first I thought it was the throwout bearing, until I noticed it when I used the hand clutch. So for me it could only mean one thing, and that would be that it is something in the tranny. It only does it in 4th gear. It doesnt don't the whole time in 4th gear, just when you initially let off on either clutch. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Tranny noises can be tough to figure out. Some might be normal and some might be a bearing going out. 4th will almost always make funny noises because things are spinning faster. One thing you can do is drain the oil and filter it to look for metal. After you drain it put a couple gallons of diesel in it and drive it around (no load) a while, then drain again. Depending on how dirty it is it might take a few flushes. Then refill with clean oil and monitor. I bought round strong magnets for all 3 drain plugs before to at least try and contain metal from going to the pump.

the final drives in ours howls when in 4th gear.  but you can hear it come and go when it goes from holding back down hill to pulling up hill.  that's the nature of strait cut gears.  D15 does the same.  they went to angle cut gears on the 17's and that took the noise out of the finals.  without hearing that's the only thing i can think of.

Sounds like clutch chatter. Lots of these old tractors have a little vibration in the foot clutch when your starting out in 4th. The hand clucth in my CA mowing tractor will make a chattering sound occasionally, especially if I slip it a bit to much. Everytihing is worn some and has more play.
