looking at 2 machines- the L3 is perfect with heads for about 13 the r52 needs work for about 24k
i need more capacity abut will keep my m2. i am worried about parts- closest dealer with inventory is 150 miles
or i might go with a 9500 deere
will need to hange a 436 head on any of these. i like the r52 but is is rough- needs a glass door and another piece of glass- the tube for the bubble up- a good bath- some belts etc- 3600/2600 on it
whatever i buy- i have to be the one to work on it

It's all about the maintenance. If a machine looks like it has been taken care of, it probably has. If it looks beat, it almost surely is.

The L3 is a good machine. I traded my M2 for an N6 with 630 head, M2 had too much corn going out the back end. L2-3s were nowhere to be found around this area. N6 has never failed me , granted it is 10 serial numbers from an R6. Do Not even think of the JD9500, poorest excuse of a combine JD ever made. That is why the 9510 series came out so soon and all the words "updated" were put advertizing of the 95/9600 JDs. Not even most of the updates worked. Good Luck

Depends on wether you do any oat or wheat? Then you may prefer to stay with the L3. If your doing corn on hillsides I would give the advantage to the r52, although the hiilside blower on L3 would help. The heads from ms fit Ls but you would have to get different heads with r52. The jd is going to cost about 3 times more to find one worth looking at but you do have a better choice of heads, you would want to find a latter model with more hp and updates.

Maybe purchase the L3, if its close to you? Or, not? Take both the L3 & M2, along with heads and put them up for sale. There are many guys still looking for these good machines. They probably have numerous parts to accommodate these older machines. Take the money from your 2 combine sales, plus add some more $ and find a good R52. Although good, the L or M will not rival the bigger capacity of a good rotor machine. Stay away from the jd 9400, 9500, or 9600.

The r52 is by far a better combine but get one that is maybe in better shape, you will never go back to a conventional machine.

I have had an R52 for the last 17 years. A very good machine it has been. I had and R50 for 3 years before that and an L3 for many years before that. The R52 will outwork the L3 without even a fair comparison. It will do a better cleaning job, way better thrashing job and do much less damage to the clean grain you get out of it than any L or M. My Dad bought an M2 so (he could drive a combine, I guess) a couple falls ago. It has been a reminder of why we switched from the conventional back when. You will never get the fuel economy down in the conventional to where the rotary will give you. They are just as easy to work on or easier really than the L or M. The bubble up auger tube you can get rolled by a local welding shop and buy the flyghting for the auger shaft from AGCO or a flyghting supplier and it should not cost you more than $200. The glass I would not want to guess as we had a door shatter and it was not cheap many years ago. If you are planning on keeping your combine for some time you will want to go with the rotary, the cab is not even comparable to the conventional. You can hear the hour meter tick in the R52, the M2, well you wear ear plugs, door closed or open makes little difference. The heads from the L,M can work on the R as e ran a 438 and a 630 black head for many years on the R52. After going to the hugger though I would not go back, it is far better all around, we also went to 830 which much better suit the R52. When it runs full it does the best job and at 5 to 6 mph with a 630 head you can get real busy, especially unloading at that speed.

I sure like my L2. They are good machines. I've never ran an R series for more than an hour but my uncle sure likes his R40 over their 2166 Case other than capacity as the R40 is a smaller machine. The cab is pretty nice on the 2166 but that is more comparable to an R52.
