For Me!! Several Friends of mine are Mechanics as I once was. They had been working fleet or dealer shops and field services for DECADES where some dozen of them asked pertinent questions of a few of us old timers as to pitfalls to avoid and started Independent Mechanic Field services. Most had older farm trucks they could initially open with where the change to a service truck was fairly nominal. Two started a little under two years ago and have advanced to Newer yet still used actual Service grade trucks with better Autocrane units and built in compressors.
I did that style work back in the 1970s and 80s where money just was not there and we tended to use well worn older used ton trucks, today they can achieve $130-170 an hour with three hour minimum charges, and STILL have calls they have to turn away. So far only one failed, he tried to Lowball or cutrate to gain work thinking volume exceeds any losses, one of those pitfalls. Two others have specialized on HE, adding specialized tooling to work Cat and Komatsu or to perform field track and Undercarriage work. The last couple of guys have started hiring extra help and added trucks, for doing highway and field truck repairs, are going gangbusters as shops cannot handle the volumes and wrecker services are becoming fewer still to tow the machines to garages. With Extra mechanics they charge the same rate just figure the wages and benefits for 'Contractor' mechanics as part of that rate. Those guys are making six figure incomes alone with added six figure bonus ABOVE the expenses to have hired help, are smart enough to bank most of that for upgraded equipment. They are making a killing while skilled workers remain thin.

When out equipment at work goes in for repairs (not even major repairs) they spend months trying to get to it. The stuff under warranty the dealer provides a rental the older stuff we have to provide a rental.
Those guys can make out well around here. A good small engine shop with parts and knowledge of modern equipment can do well too. Not a decent small engine shop within 100 miles of here. |

Ag equipment, big trucks and construction independent mechanics can do well. Some farmers and truckers have nice shops but sometimes lack the time, special tools or skills for some jobs. With construction and some ag stuff easier to fix in place then haul to a shop depending on the repair. Good independent shops around here have all the work they can handle. Biggest thing for independent guys is keeping up with technology.
