There's a post on AT about a guy buying a "known" dead machine (BOBCAT 974) that is now having "issues" with loading/transporting
![]() By the "bidding" aspect of my post, I work with a guy that bids residential construction projects that require tools that he doesn't he even owns to DO the job ![]() IMO, it's the same deal, if you can't make the "climax", don't start stroking yourself

One can rent most any tool or piece of equipment these days. It is a common practice in the construction industry. Specialized gear or extra equipment may be needed for one project. It may make more business sense to rent than purchase for one use or use a lease purchase, if future use is seen. Often tools and equipment are purchased after the bid is awarded. Sometimes a specialty contractor, with the equipment, is subcontracted. Why tie up a lot of money in tools and equipment to place a bid you may not get? For a bid you figure out what you will need, where to get it if you don't have it, and have the ability to get it; you don't run out and buy everything.

Had a friend who sold his truck and HD triaxle float used to haul the Case680. It was CHEAPER to pay the 'float fee' than permits, insurance, fuel, etc. Another guy a new, old skool immigrant(tool/die maker) bid on a job,got it, then bought the machine to do it, THAT one job paid for the machine.

One of our local (highway construction) contractors that used to own all their heavy equipment, now leases most of it. he told me he bids a job based on the rental/lease rates. When the job is done, the equipment goes back.
He always has the latest, up to date equipment and no unanticipated major repairs.
Employees that used to do repairs and maintenance all winter are now laid off. |

My boss bids residential and commercial jobs without tools to do the job.
We sub contractors possess the tools needed to do our part of the job. If I don’t have what I need I rent or buy. |
