170 hydraulic question

I have a 170 Allis Chalmers. When I set the height of an implement with the hydraulics it holds while the engine runs. When I shut the engine down or sometimes when I let it idle the implement slowly goes to the ground. If I shut the three point hitch hydraulics off the implement will hold for a day or so but finally will drop to ground level.Where do I start with this??

Sounds normal in some respects, for an old hydraulic system, but you could have a couple of problems as well. The first question I have after reading your post is ..are you trying to "hold" the implement with the position control or traction booster control. I can "hold" my implement with the traction booster at 1000 rpm and above..drop the rpms below 1000 and the lift arms will settle.... this is normal.  Maybe your traction booster is not working or it is not adjusted properly...just a thought. Anyway your AC operators manual has a section on adjusting the traction booster linkage.. quite simple, actually. I've had frozen position & traction control linkage do strange things over the years.

Mine used to hold the implement in any position I left it. Now as long as the engine is revved a little it will hold the implement okay but let's it drop fast if I cut the engine without disabling the hydraulics. It seems as though it worked well but iis now working the way most of them do. I can live with this.

After shutting the engine off,  If your 3Pt arms don't/didn't move and your main hydraulic control lever(up, dn, float ,traction booster,etc) is in the traction boster position .. then you have a hydraulic system problem. When the main lever is in the traction booster position..just above float... the arms will settle after the engine is shut off. This is normal opoeration.  I make it a habit to place my main control lever in the traction booster position when parking my 175 for the day/night... arms settle and any dirt/mud/manure is wiped off the 3pt rams... keeps them from getting pitted and eventually leaking.

I'll have to take another look at that but I am sure that the control is in the traction booster position.
