Back in 38 there were 2 styles if rear rims. narrow split rims and rims with 4 short angles rivited to the bottom of the bead flange. Both used 3/4 bolt clamps and excentrics useable only for the rim they were designed for.
When they needed to be replaced you had no choice but to convert to the new style AC 4 bump rims along with two sets of the 5/8 bolt clamps and excentrics.
Today, to just get by as replacements, has anyone used the standard 4 loop rims and plain bolts ? Any problems encountered with this swap other than they are not OEM AC ?

May I add that you can find new 4 loop 8 X 24 rims for $95 each, plus freight, online.

No problem mounting them. My 38 B has a 4 loop rim replacement on one side. I know some people have gone to these to eliminate problems with the eccentrics not keeping the wheel on.

I don't have a good close-up of just the rims and wheels, but a PO did just what you're talking about with my '39. Bolts with 2 nuts on the inside hold the rim to the wheel center.

Ken, Our 38 has the W shaped wedges on one side, and the 4 loop on the other side. Should be interchangable. We have the 4 loop rims available, I just don't list them on our site. JimD

I changed my model C to looped, bolt on rims after many exciting sudden drops when wheels fell off. I've been very happy with the new rims. I think I bought them from Millers Tire.

I think the guy in AC engineering that conceived and designed the excentric wheel hub to rim fastening system wasn't exactly"the brightest bug in the lamp"

Ken: I have played and toggled with the excentric clamps and with good solid rims they work fine. Have a both a B and C now that have the new 4 Loops. They mount up easy and work fine, one is stamped F & H 24 W8 another had a slip attached to the inside of the rim that said M and W Gear.
Although not original, I have come to accept that from a serviceability standpoint that the new 4 loop design is a better set up. I use Grade 8 bolts to carry the dead load of the rim and tire.
Good Luck with this. How is the military B progressing? Would love to see some pictures of it at some point.

Somehow I doubt that you are looking for feedback from anyone other than owners of the early B tractors that you mention, but here's my 2 bits anyway: As you and some others here know, I have 4-loop rims on my '43 C, and they have not given a minute's trouble. I don't feel too guilty about them since the tractor is far from minty original anyway, and it was originally a steel wheel tractor. My '49 B has eccentrics (and shims, and extra eccentrics, and loose wheel problems, and...) I duped myself into restoring this one, and now I'm trying to decide whether to buy new eccentric rims and blocks ($$$) or break down and cheap out with the 4-loops. If it was just a show tractor, I would band aid the original rims and be happy. Unfortunately, I tend to work the daylights out of my little toy tractors (it's FUN!!), so I'm sure that would be a short lived solution. Dad's '57 B has eccentric lock rims that seem to be fine. In the end, I think Orangeman summed it up well in his second paragraph.

I have ecentric locks on 2 B's ans 2 C's and have not had a problem. 1 B did require shims under the ecentrics, and it wasn't the rim or the ecentrics. I had 2 different wheels and different ecentrics on it, and they were all the same. Putting 4 ecentric doesn't help any either. The ecentric in the locked position is the same as a straight bolt lock, other wise the wheel would be out of round.
I prefer to keep my tractor as original looking as possible. Bolt on rims don't give you the flexibility of wheel adjustment. Bob

The eccentrics work by trying to force the wheel "out of round" . 2. Deviating from a circular form or path, as in an elliptical orbit. 3. a. Not situated at or in the geometric center. b. Having the axis located elsewhere than at the geometric center.
You can adjust the width on the bolt on wheels 4 ways.
