 Topic: fuel leak. on hd 4

i have a short metal line that has rubbed a hole in it. it is on the return line from the governor to the fuel tank on an HD4 ALLIS CRAWLER. Went up town and no one could make me a line. Don't know how much pressure it holds but would I just be able to get a rubber fuel line and just splice it in or do you think it wouldn't hold the pressure. thanks norm

I don't remember what they looked like. Most are just steel lines with rubber grommets. Not much pressure . Would brake line work, not sure of size. HTH Tracy

Just went and looked at mine. They have rubber flex line at the bends. So I think a longer piece would work. HTH Tracy

mine has the flex hose until it gets to the frame work then its a steel line. problem is the steel line was rubbing and got a hole in her. thanks norm

Norm, just slide a piece of hose and two clamps over the steel line. Clamp at each end to cover leak. Problem solved. HTH Tracy

take the line off, buff the area around the hole. clean it well with brake cleaner or ether and braze it shut.

thought about that to but the hole is right next to the fitting so if I brazed it I woudnt be able to turn the fitting. thanks norm

Norm/All: Search HS50 Steel Tubing Plymouth Comapany- Lenz Company for the tooling to make any flares needed.
Make your line and fix.

I think it was mentioned earlier however you could replace with stainless steel braided hose and it would last another 30 years, or a trip to any auto parts store for steel tubing or copper and a pipe bender and flaring kit. It takes what they call a double flare I believe nuts it's simple. On my 16 I replaced the fuel with braided hose and used copper tubing for the hard connections. You can also take your steel tubing off in one piece and then you can have a replacement one made by any brake shop or do it yourself. Satisfying when I did it myself.

Put in a fuel proof rubber hose if it's the return side - problem solved
