Well, I just finished up all the repairs on the final drive and after completely removing the track, I clearly have 2 very worn out truck idler wheels...bearings are gone. Couple questions:
1. Do I need to remove the inner and outer bottom guard rails to pull the idlers? 2. About half of the idler block mounting bolts are seized up...and one has a rounded off bolt head. Slips with a 7/8" socket. I cant hardly get a torch in there to heat them up where they thread into the blocks. Any tips on how to remove those bolts?

you will need to remove the rock guard to get the rollers off and it will help with access to the bolts

thanks, that's what I figured. I will have to torch off all the rock guard bolts to get them off.

i did it on my 16. NOT fun. I used a long 3/4 rachet because you cant get an impact on them. if you torch the heads you will still have to go back and get them out somehow to put the guard back on.

I would suggest a 6 piont socket. The cheap impacts ones are good in places like your working in as the thickness will not get in the way. I have broken breaker bars and a adators for using 1/2 drive socket with 3/4 drive ratchets but I have never broken a cheap impact socket in 40 years.
You said you had the track apart, hopefully it still is. Remove track frame from under tractor and flip it upside down. Then use a BIG IMPACT WRENCH,bolts down there generally fight all the way.

Another trick, I've seen done, is to weld another nut to the damaged head. THe heat of welding may also ease the locked threads. I'd weld a nut on, and melt a bees wax candle against the hot mass, that ole wax trick works wonders, sometimes...

Thanks guys...yep I sure don't want to pull that truck frame and flip it over! I will try a 6 pt impact socket. I also think I can get in there with torch and heat up the threaded block after I pull the rock guards.

I hate to burst your bubble but those bolts are not threaded into the track frame. they have a 1" square block on top of the track frame that the rock guard bolts and the roller bolts thread into. you cannot get a torch in there to heat them up. if you only have one or two rollers to change and it were me I would cut a small piece of the rock guard out at that roller. there are a lot of rock guard bolts to take out and most will break off. when roller is replaced, then weld the piece back in. the two bolts that hold the roller on and the two on either side go into the same block. there are 4 blocks on an HD5 as there are 4 rollers. I will try to find a pic of the blocks or look in the parts book. not that hard to remove the track frame and flip it, much easier to work on upside down. I agree, bolts will fight the whole way, they get seized in the roller block. good luck!
