So I got my self into doing a timing belt/valve job on a Honda Odyssey.
I watched many different YouTube shows on timing this motor. One guy in particular was working on the same year motor. I watched them over and over again. I have some literature at work. I studied that extensively. I'm positive I can do this job. So Saturday it was reassembly day. I got the heads back together. I then went and timed the lower half of the motor. Barred it over 4 to 5 times it turned great. Threw the heads on and timed them per the book. Put the timing belt on and spun it again probably 3 maybe 4times. And when I say spun it I turned it so the timing marks lined back up. I'm confident I have it timed right. Nothing felt ugly. Put the rest of the motor together and it will barely crank. Cranks like I have a half dead 6 volt. Found the starter to be bad. Got a different one. It still cranked very slow. I took out all the plugs and it still will barely crank. I took my bar and socket to the crank bolt and I can not turn it clock wise. I can turn it counter clockwise though. I poured some oil into the cylinders thinking the cylinders were dry. That's where I quit for the night. |

You have something assembled wrong or have bent something in the process. Turning the engine over without the timing belt attached if not non interference engine could have bent any number of things.

I only turned the bottom end on its own before I put the heads and timing belt on. Then I set the head timing before I put the heads on. Once I had the timing belt and heads on I then turned the whole motor.
It turned over so nice at that time. I could turn it backwards as far as I wanted. I ended up going backwards about half way. I can't imagine that I got something put together wrong. I'm wondering if those cylinders are that dry causing that much drag. We did put some 10 weight oil in the cylinders and that seems to have helped some |

I hate those dang motors. I bought my grandson a Toyota untill it just cost too much to continue repairing. Then I bought him a Honda. As soon as his dad got home from afaganastan he got rid of it. It was a money pit too. Good luck with your project.

I honestly don't think I lost anything in the motor. Every not and bolt was accounted for.
I'm thinking that there is a locked up accessory. I'll look into that tomorrow. I mean gosh fellows I turned the motor by hand with a little ratchet when I assembled it. Turned very nicely. Now I can't turn it forward at all with a breaker bar. But I can go backwards which is why I'm leaning twords an accessory |

I always found it best when timing an engine like that, that you should turn the crankshaft a quarter turn past TDC. Put the head on with the timing mark aligned, then turn the crank shaft Back to TDC. And then install the timing belt.

And always have the slack side of the belt on the tensioner side.

YES... look at the alternator and air cond compressor to see if they are DRAGGING... Take the acces belt off and turn it over... If water pump is belt driven , you can still crank over , start and run for 30 seconds for a test.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts. I sat down with the van the other night and had a small chat with it. I took in all your suggestions. I said to my self, self why could I turn this motor with a ratchet at first and now I need a big bar and can't turn it.
I ended up removing the accessory belt and found the alternator to be locked up solid. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that could bring an engine to a near complete halt. |

It can really frustrate a person when you are working on a project like that and something totally unrelated messes with you like that.

I'd also love to know Jay what did you do.
By going backwards you unload the tensioner allowing the belt to slip. When you went forward the tensioner would grab like it's designed. |
