Only runs well with choke partly on.new valves and rings. New carb kit and cleaned carb 3 times. Any ideas on why I can not a just to run without a little choke?

After new carb kit choke shaft & throttle shaft fit well. Carb is a tax 879 type B. The engine block is am5363 & head is am5481. Engine # h1382r. I believe it's a 160 cid engine. Am I correct.
? The carb maybe for a 149 cod engine. Could this make the load jet too small? |

I may be wrong, but I think your carb is for the 160. On tractors this old, sometimes parts that "will fit" are not necessarily the right ones. How does the bore of the carb compare to the bore of the manifold?

I have a good running Carb for the 149, I would be willing to trade for the one you have.

Thanks for the tip on checking the intake manifold compared to the carb venturi. The tsx879 is smaller by a quarter inch in diameter. My book showes a tsx 869 for the 160 cid engine. Don't know if I am on the right track yet. The engine runs well with some choke.

Mine did the same thing and I found a small air leak where the carb met the intake manifold. Found it by spraying a little ether around carb, sped up when i hit the leak.

Yes, it can be exactly what kweeber says and often is the case. You can use a can of FLAMMABLE brake Kleen or similar if you don't have Ether. Use one of those hollow sticks in the spray can nozzle to pinpoint where the leak is. On the other hand, it's possible that the main jet is clogged and the choke is allowing the engine to pull more fuel through the idle circuit. If you have been running Ethanol added fuel it will mess up a carburetor. Ooops, I just reread your post. Already put a kit in it. Go with the air leak. Edited by Ferdinand - 14 Apr 2017 at 8:08am |

Had that happen with mine. Gravity fed carb and crap in tank partially blocked fuel line.
