Here is my 1939 Allis Chalmers B that I just purchased, SN B14514. The engine should be original too, SN BE14540G. It doesn't run but the engine isn't locked up, so hopefully a little tinkering on the weekends will get it at least temporarily running. Just has the hand crank start, which is fine with me. It has PTO/BP/Hydraulics and had a rigged up 2-way plow on it before I bought it. Probably explains the slightly modified rear hitch.
I'm pretty excited because it is my first tractor. I haven't done much with it yet because I'm sitting at college right now, but I'm planning on a full engine rebuild over the summer and a rattlecan paint job. I'll have to get a drawbar from the junkyard then too and maybe some original front rims, if I can find any good ones. The tires on it now hold air fine, so it's going to stay like it is for a good while. It's going to take some work, but if it didn't it wouldn't be any fun! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Tin work is pretty nice set are you going back to the origanal set ? I find it very interesting how the old girls get modifications done to them and I always wonder what brought it about. Some modifations I have seen over the yr were very clever and others you wonder how many drinks it took the guy to come up with that and why? |

Congrat's on your first tractor! A good choice for a starter. My 48' B was my first Tractor bout' 8 years ago. Still have it yet, and has been a great little work horse for what I needed. My collection grew a little since then. You'll have a lot of fun with that little B! You'll make my buddy Bill Long happy to! lol! If you need any help, you'll definetely get it here that's for sure! Welcome to the Orange family!

Haha yeah, you should see the 3-pt hitch on my dad's WD. It works but I don't know how much longer it will hold together! Whoever put it on there was definitely going low budget.
I haven't decided about the seat yet. The one on it now is pretty awkward to get into, but I'll probably leave it on until I get the tractor running and decide from there. My dad has a WD and I like how the seat rides. If I decide to go totally original, it will probably be a few years (when I'm out of school and have more money, haha!). Thanks guys! |

A fun project tractor. Lots of people on here have started with a B and moved on to larger tractors. Help is only a key stroke or two away.

that 2 way plow would look nice if you could find the correct lift & 2 way valve . it appears like you have the correct plow drawbar & adjustment lever. good luck & enjoy.

The rear hitch bar ahead of the rear axle is for the two-way (or a one-way) plow. The hand lever controls the angle of the plow. If you can get that plow, it's a very useful implement for a B.

This little 38 B looked almost as bad as your 39 WJohn. That was just 6 months ago. SN 751. My friend Gary who has never restored a tractor and I tackled this project together. Gary bought the B off ebay and funded the restoration. I furnished the shop space and what little talent I have to make it happen. Serious efforts were made to keep things you can see as close to correct for the vintage as possible. Some things about 38Bs are 38 vintage only. Since this picture was taken vintage rear wheel weights were added along with a correct as possible canvas seat cover
It looked so bad when Gary got it home he never to a before picture of it. He was almost ready to part it out as unrestorable.

We are trying to figure out why the aircleaner stack is so short. Were they shorter in 38? It does not appear to be cut off with a hacksaw. Gary also shortened his straight pipe and got rid of those orange stripes. |

Dannyraddatz, I'm from just south of Paris, IL (where the Dale Haymaker allis chalmers museum is). That show sounds neat and if I get the time I'll try to make it up there, but it's a pretty good drive.
I decided that if the guy still has that plow, I'll get it from him. Hopefully he does and I'll get it in a few weeks.
That is a nice B Ken and Gary! I'd be happy if mine turns out half that nicely. Thanks for all of the encouragement everybody! |

you might want to take that KIX filter off and throw it as far as you can, then run after it and kick it some more. Most of the older WIX filters caused loss of oil pressure and could cause internal damage. Get a FRAM 159 when you change the oil. Very interesting lookin gtractor.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Don't worry! After I get the engine running once, I'm going to change the oil and get a FRAM filter on it right away, unless the oil pressure and compression are so bad that it needs a rebuild. Then I'll fix her up before I worry about fluids and such. I hope that the lower oil pressure hasn't ruined the internals.
Also, I should be getting that plow and drawbar sometime later this month.

Yeah, the tractor had been sitting there for half an hour and the cat was already napping on it. I imagine she and my dog will be "helping" me with the B this summer.
