Original poster might also have injectors installed backwards as they should be Bosch injectors in 1985. They will fit either way, but only one way is correct.

I am working on a 1985 3500 60kv genset. It came to me with the fuel tank and injection system filled with water.I thawed out the entire machine.Had the pump and injectors rebuilt.I reinstalled the pump at 28 degrees.btdc as it was when i removed it.The unit smoked but not to bad.It had no power under load.I pulled a comp test found #4 weak #5 40 lbs.Pulled the head these two pistons were melted the other 4 perfect.I pulled the engine and installed an overhaul kit .Had the head done.Reassembled and started. The engine smokes more than it did before. No longer white, light blue wet fuel smell like a cold two stroke detroit. It does not improve with operating temp increase. What is the correct timing procedure foe this engine? I have had no luck in finding manuals. It also cranks longer than i would like to start. Thanks joekbyme
