AC 45 Grader steering shaft

   We've progressed from the back bumper to a running grader and we've now arrived at the steering section.  The main box seems very good (in spite of a lack of the top Torrington bearing) but from there it is downhill.

The steering arm flapped badly - due to a stripped retaining nut welded on and a (split) pot metal ring that was supposed to take up some slack.  The spline in the arm is useable.  And the bottom Torrington bearing is shrapnel and the shaft there not pretty.

Chances of a replacement shaft are not good - I haven't found a dead one to raid.

So, before I take on rebuilding the steering shaft spline,  anybody know of another Allis shaft around 54mm diameter with 36 tapered splines?  Thoughts run to perhaps a HD 6 final drive pinion shaft?

If such exists and I can find one we'll chop, pilot and reweld - I already have to reclaim the lower bearing area.  Which might be the place to try some Eutectic 185.  All of which will also be less painful than rebuilding the spline.

	Why not use this as an opertunity to convert it to hydraulic steering?
	Yea, I can fix that.....

	D 17 Dave, It is already hydraulic steering. The box is mounted in the nose and has two bearings in the lower part of the nose as well. Incidently it looks like it was made by the same crew as that on older Cat 12 graders. But they use a smaller shaft and have the power ram linked to the steering arm at the bottom of the shaft - not sure I've got room to do this. Also looks like the rear wheel brakes might be the same as Cat 12 - more when we get there.
