Was out bushhogging today with the D19D. I got in some tall weeds and it started spitting and sputtering. I could disengage the bushhog and bring the tractor back to idle and it would idle fine but with you revved it up it would start sputtering again. I also noticed it would puff out some black smoke when it was sputtering. It really wasn't a dead miss, just running ruff with a noticeable loss of power.
Limped it back to the shop and checked all the usual suspects, fuel filters, air filter, and made sure I had a good stream of fuel at the injector pump inlet. Everything looked good and I changed the fuel filters. Started it back up and it ran fine. I then went back out and ran the bushhog some more and after about 30 minutes it started again. This time I took it back to the shop and did nothing other than let it sit for about 15-20 minutes. Fired it back up and it did fine under load for about another 30 minutes and it started again. It seems as if after it runs awhile it will act up but if you let it sit for a few minutes it will run fine until everything gets warmed up again and start sputtering. Tractor was running a little warmer than usual do to the air temp being fairly hot and radiator had a little chaff but nowhere near overheating. Anybody have any ideas? I did get some bad fuel about 2 years ago that gummed up my IP so I had to tear it down and clean it. I'm wondering if I haven't got all that gum out and something in the IP is sticking again. It's almost like something is screwy with the advance in the IP as it only does it at higher RPMs. I need me one of those clear windows to check that.

make sure the return is flowing free. This sounds just like a broken flex ring issue, plugging the return, and it eventually builds up enough housing pressure that the advance quits working correctly. As it sits, the pressure bleeds down, and it'll run correctly for a while until it gets the pressure built up again.

a John Deere 4010 on an auction a couple weeks ago wouldn't run at all untill the side plate was loosened enough to let fuel spill out while it was running.

I installed a new updated flex ring when I had the IP apart last year so I don't think that's a problem. The old flex ring was gone so I guess there still could be some of it floating around but I cleaned the IP spotless when I had it apart. I did open up the fuel tank and looked in there with a flashlight and there was good flow coming out of the return.
I did run it this afternoon for about a hour without issue so we will see.

Fuel cap? My D17D acted similarly when it was pulling a vacuum on the fuel tank because the cap was not letting air in while running.
