How would that help? There are chunks missing from the edges, gonna be hell on the pivot shaft after I rebuild the steering box. |

Parts book shows different numbers. BUT...it looks like the only difference is the length. I'm thinking you could buy one for a B with the gearbox you have and cut it down. Would need a new key way milled in the steering wheel end.

Ah ha, it's the worm gear that's chipped. I was thinking it was the actual shaft and couldn't see how that would affect anything unless it's at the seal area. I think you may be right looking for another shaft. I'm sure that one would work for a long time but it'll be sloppy at some points. I wonder if a good welding shop could repair it?

I think I would grab a B gearshaft and cut it down.

Yea, that's what I'm hoping to avoid. Are the early B steering shafts the same worm groove? Edited by AJ - 03 Jan 2017 at 6:50am |

Weld it up, get your dremel out, and grind it back down! I've fixed a lot of combine sprockets that way lol

I'm no expert, but b's and c's used one of 2 types, either Ross or Gemmer. Take a look on the housing, to see who made it, then start your search...

AJ, new posting over on YT under "Discussions-Allis Chalmers" with a fella seeking info on an old truck with a ROSS shaft/bearings. May want to follow that post and see if anyone jumps on with parts source info as I find some good info over there sometimes.
You may get lucky . . . . |

there are two different gear boxes used on the B tractor, the Ross and the GEEMER.. They have different internals, but the complete box can be interchanged on the tractor. The IB uses the same "Box", but the shaft is several inches shorter. Best way to make a B into an IB is to cut the shaft in half at the middle, remove the several inches, and slide each half back into a 1/2 inch piece of pipe about 4 inches long and socket weld each end......... I have done this several times.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

The IB has a different rake to the box to accomidate for the short length from a regular B. I just need a good worm gear and I can do the rest.

AJ, are you in a hurry? I took a Ross apart on my C, (1940) and changed it out because the pin was shot. Swapped the whole thing out. I have it up at the farm but I won't be going up for about a week. I NEVER throw anything away, so I probably still have it. I can look if you want.

Thanks Ted but the worm gear on a C is backwards to a B. I have several really nice C shafts with worm gears on them. The B ones seem to be hard to find. Not sure why since allis made 120,000 of these. You'd think they would be easier to find. I may be buying an NOS one from Paul.
