I went up to the Jessie Wheeler retirement farm auction yesterday in northeastern Montana. Drove right up to the end of the earth, then came back about a mile, and there it was. I didn't get anything bought, in fact I never even took my bidding number out of my pocket, but I met some nice allis folks and it was a good road trip. Finally met Mitchell Jorstad (Jorstad brothers, on here), a fellow North Dakotan who really has his allis game on. Super nice young man with a nice family. If the auction would have been closer to home (it was 250 miles from my door step), and wheat would be 10 bucks a bushel instead of four, I would probably have brought home an L2 that went for 250 bucks and transplanted the engine into my XT, and a 7580 that 1,600 bucks. It was definitely bargain day on Gleaner combines. I didn't get the exact price on what the L3 brought, but I heard em crying for 1,500 bucks on it. Another L2 hydro (tan cab) I think only brought 12 to 15 huindred. And then the last L2 (black cab, no hydro) brought 250 bucks.
Tractors, six of em allis, were all black belly 7000 series. I am not sure of the hours on em, but here's what they brought: 7080 with 7,500 hours on it brought $3,250. This tractor, he did not have running, although it was supposed to be a runner. He just ran out of time to get batteries in em all and such. It had a really descent set of 30.5-32's on the back 7580, the one I should have bought, brought $1,600. Another one that he did not have running. It did not have duals on it, and no 3 pt 7020 power shift, with a very heavy eezee on loader brought $5,500 7045 power director with 7,500 hours on it brought $6,500 7060 power shift with another e zee on loader on it brought $10,250 8550 brought $4,500 All of the tractors were in their work clothes, and looked like they had earned their keep, but were not beat to death. Just good honest, hard working tractors. Most of em needed cab kits. Paint on em all looked "typical allis original orange". The e zee on loaders were heavy duty and in good shape, but in my opinion, they just looked like they sat way too high on the tractors, and would have made for poor visibility. The 8550 kind of had me crying in my soup, because it appeared to be nicer than one that I payed 10 grand for this spring, and spent 3 grand getting it home. Oh well, timing is everything. Darrel |

Man, all those combines went for less than scrap prices in my opinion. Most of the prices mentioned seem a bit on the low side.

Too bad it wasn't closer to MI that 7580 would have been tempting. Heck even the 8550.

I know the feeling trying to save every penny. It's to the point it's taking some of the fun out of it. |

It was good to meet you as well! The family and I all enjoyed getting to visit with you, we had a good time. I probably shouldn't have been so cheap and bought some tractors but was still a good time.

Those prices on the combines and the big tractors are a crime. Were the combines really that beat, or was it really cold or what? Trev.

I think Shameless nailed it, ,green country. The L2 gear drive did have the shoe out of it. It was laying beside it all broken up. Other than that, I thought the machines looked good, however I didnt investigate the internals on em. They had em all three running for the whole time, and man they purred nicely. Weather wasn't a factor, even though it was a little chilly, but not bad. Was a good crowd there. Remote area may have been a factor, because I don't think there is any tractor/combine salvage yards anywhere near there. If I had been in any financial position to do it, at the very least I should have bought that L3,and I am quite sure that I could have turned a profit on it. Darrel |
