Can't get my WC in Reverse |

I was in my woods with my 1937 WC, backed up to turn around a couple of times and then loaded some fire wood on my trailer and dove out. When I finally stopped, I tried to put the WC in reverse to back up to the wood pile and it would not go into reverse. The little lever that allows it to go into reverse would not move.
So I fiddled around with adjusting the nut on the lever rod and in the process, did some disconnecting and the 6 inch rod going straight down into the transmission was pulled out. Now it looks like I have to disassemble the whole top of the transmission cover to see if I can reconnect the lever rod inside the transmission. Any advice on what I am into? Thanks, Dave |

Sound's like the spring and clip on The bottom of the shift lever popped off on you. It could be more but hopefully it is this simple, hardest thing you will have to deal with in this case is the parts will be in the bottom of the transmission. Fishing them out with a magnet might be a pain. There may be a bigger issue of wear in the tower causeing the sifting issue but that is hard to know from this post.

Off topic kinda, but isn't that a truck transmission?

Thanks Redwood, I got my IT manual out and did see the spring and latch clip drawing.
The reverse Latch rail come right out of the top before I removed the cover. so you must be right, the spring and clip are probably in the bottom of the transmission. There is a notch near the bottom end of the latch rail that does not look worn. Do I have to removed the sliders to get at the latch spring/latch area for replacement. I did remove the cover off a styled WC sitting back in the woods, but it is all set up. Also the Shift lever is straight because they didn't need a bent lever on the styled tractor, the unstyled gas tank gets in the way of a straight lever where the curves of the styled tractor tank allows a straight lever. When I take the cover apart, I can put a new dust cover on from the end of the shift lever? |

Crestion, I do remember that that was one of the features of the WC so they could cut the costs. So maybe it was made by a truck transmission factory. I have no idea if AC did or did not make their own transmissions in 1937. Be the way it was built the year I was born. That was 79 years ago.
Any help I can get from you guys is much appreciated, Dave |

All right, had some progress with the spare parts tractor cover. I got the sliders all rocking, but not moving back and forth. Also, that cover is in much better shape than the original cover at the shift lever pivot pin. The original cover had the casting cracked at the pivot pin and someone previous to my owning it had used some of that repair stuff that is supposed to be able to be as good as the new castiing on it. It looks to me like I if I can free up the sliders to work right then change the shifter lever to the origiinal, I can have it fixed. First I need to find someplace I can work on them where I can control the detent balls and the springs.
How do I get the expansion plugs out? Are they reusable or will I have to buy some new ones assuming AGCO even sells them. I am thinking that they just drive through |

Hey Joe, Thanks, I downloaded the pdf and printed out the 3 pages regarding the transmission cover/shift assembly. It's a more detailed exploded diagram but it doesn't tell me how to remove the expansion plugs. I will have to do some experimenting, I guess.
BTW, are you the guy that had the WC with a side seat for your daughter? I am thinking I drove to your home and saw your tractor. If I remember right, you worked at some farm elevator or something? Or am I thinking of some one else, but that name Joe Murphy sure rang a bell. |

Yes Dave, that was my WC, you came by and looked at some fenders I had. But I was working at a Deere Dealer back then.

To remove the expansion plugs I tapped on the base of the shift fork with a dead blow mallet. You have to put at least that much force on it to pop it over the detention bearing. You want to do this carefully so not to damage the fork. I was able to reuse the plugs
And yes as you stated cover the spring holes well so as not to get hurt and not to lose the ball and spring. Edited by Redwood - 03 Dec 2016 at 4:58pm |

The transmission (or parts of it) was built by another company, I think it was Clark, but I'm not sure. Somebody posted a copy of an Ad for that company, plainly showed a WD transmission/differential housing, and one for a CA. I know that the WC had essentially the same gears as the early WD; that changed when they went to the constant mesh transmission.

I just had another thought. Since I am not the best mechanic in the world, and I just read Sandy Lakes advertising at the beginning of this site, and also since I have a good housing with spare parts although the shafts are rusty but do rotate, I believe I am going to call Sandy Lake Monday and find out a ball park dollar amount to put the 2 shift tops together as one good unit.
Also, it would be a good time for me to drain the transmission and put new gear oil in it. Then I would know the job has been done right with the right tools and I bet then old Allis will shift better than it ever did since I got it put together back in about 2007 At least calling them would give me an option. Not sure how much they would charge though. |
