Brother and I were getting the 66 big bin ready for soybeans after a 35 year rest sitting in the back of the shed. After a extensive going over we found out during test running of the machine that the right cylinder bearing has gone bad. The one by the bin. I have educated myself with the exploded parts views of the repair but would like any input from someone who has done it and might help. Theres not much room to remove the drive pulley with the clean grain and tailings elevators in place. We got over 3" of rain with more coming which will delay the harvest and just maybe we can fix this old girl by then. Thanks in advance, Ryan

I don't know how you'd do it. I've been wondering the same thing. How do you do it. One guy told me it's not fun. Left is a snap, but right is the hardest thing you'll ever do. I just keep pumping grease into mine in hopes they don't go out. (Fingers crossed!) If they do, it wouldn't surprise me. 1950 model and never been in a barn, and sat for 31 years before this spring.

I had to do it on mine, but I don't remember if I disassembled it in there, or if I unbolted the side panels and removed the whole cylinder. Been a few years. But the cylinder does come out pretty easily.
Yep, just looked at my old pictures. I removed the whole cylinder. Way easier!! |

Back in 1964 I removed the complete cylinder from the 66 combine then replaced the bearing. Not a bad job. Have done the same job with a F2 back 1993.

Remove the cylinder, did it a couple times. There is a pin that could be hard to get out. Same pin inventor as the brake pin on a WD.

Brother and I got a little deeper into it tonight. After getting the outer half of the drive pulley to break free after 60 years it just might not be as bad as we thought. The whole cylinder might just come out the side of the combine after removing many bolts. Bearings seem really cheap also. Ryan

I might should replace mine this winter so I don't have to worry about it going out when harvest is in full swing. Preventative maintenance.

not that bad, just takes time. just don't expect to have it done in one day. best to remove the cylinder from the machine. makes it much more easy to get at everything since you will need a bearing puller. the vari-speed adjusting fork pin should be cleaned and covered with stp oil treatment so it doesn't seize up before putting it back together will take grease better next time too.

Things are progressing. Finally got the last bearing off. We are learning a wealth of knowledge but wonder what its really worth nowadays when your dealing with a 60 year old combine!!! Ryan

Mike, I have taken a lot of pictures of the break down. Ryan ordered the bearings tonight. When the installation is complete ( by this weekend , we hope ) pictures of the start to finish will be posted. Duane
