Looking at options to repower my 1950 HD5. Current motor runs great but needs more "oomph". I'm running it with an 8 foot blade and also have a 10 foot manual swing angle blade. Read about folks using the Cummins 4BT (4 cyl. diesel, about 105 hp) to repower many older rigs. Has anyone tried this or seen it done? What other motors make for a good replacement that would provide around 75-100 hp?

Get a smaller blade , my FD5 uses a 7' blade with PAT and has more weight than HD5. The HD5B I had useda 9' blade and I could push more with the HD5G or the HD4 than the 5B
I don't think you have the weight for more HP as you will end up with track slippage and do less work.
If you want more power and speed and quicker material move you would be ahead looking for newer machine.

Most of the newer dozers weigh 14-15,000 pounds. You need the weight and length of track on the ground to achieve control of the grade. Short, light crawlers lack the ability to perform a uniform cut and fill. The weight of the material being moved controls the tractor. D3, FD5, 450 Case or JD450 are good choices for light dozer work.

hd5 with 8" blade should weigh about 12000# so it is close. i have heard the extra hp makes a big difference in the dozer's performance. i would repower it but i am a softie for older machines. wish i could find my dad's d2 cat sold in 1985. love to add to the collection, great for fine grading. most small dozers are not designed for big cut and fills anyway and if you were looking for real performance you would have a new dozer already. the great thing about the hd5 is that it is relatively inexpensive to operate. tracks are the bugger to find now.

Thanks guys for all the good info. My "old equipment" blue book puts the basic weight on this machine at a little over 12k pounds, without the blade. I'm guessing with the blade it is getting closer to 18k-20k pounds; maybe a bit less. I'm not really interested in pushing big stuff around, but have noticed that although the little 2 cyl. Jimmy motor runs like a top, it is just not quite big enough and can be dogged down pretty easily. My reprinted HD5 manuals say it should have 53 hp. Something else - my manuals say this rig should have a tranny w/ 5 gears forward and 1 reverse. I have 4 gears forward and 2 reverse. Very nice for moving around slow or quick, depending on conditions. I have learned to work w/ it, and it is always a good time. I have the 60 inch. track base and they are not real wide but I think about 16 or 18 inches. (I'm at work right now at a remote mine site, so don't have it right close by!) The sprockets are in good shape, the pins have never been turned, but the tracks are pretty rough w/ lots of "farm" repairs having been done on them. Fairly good size, though. Finally, I did manage to pick up another HD5 that is about 75% complete, mostly for parts, including a really nice set of tracks. All in all, I think it would be worth repowering, or pushing up the power in the Jimmy motor if that was possible. I think around 75 hp would be nice. Alaska used to be a big buyer of Allis Chalmers products and I find stuff laying around all over the place up here.
