working on a 63 D-17 gas it has a alternator instead of a generator and is hooked up as 12volt negative ground currently, i think they were suppose to be pos ground, or do they need to be 12volt neg ground with a alternator?
the coil is currently wired for pos ground Edited by BLee Mn - 01 Feb 2025 at 1:48pm |

I converted our D17 IV to an alternator, negative ground. It used to be positive ground with a generator from the factory. Sounds like yours was converted.

Almost all alternators are set up to be Negative Ground.
In theory they work better if you wire them for negative ground, but on low-performance engines like this it is likely that you couldn't really tell the difference.

On Neg. ground systems, the wiring to the Coil is as follows: Plus (+) side of the Coil to the Ignition switch. (IGN) terminal minus (-) side to the Distributor. If you have it still wired for pos ground, switch the wires around. You'll be good ta' go.... ![]() Steve@B&B
