 Topic: WD bedder/lister planter

I'm trying to put together a WD lister planter for a local show (and maybe take to Creston's show). I would like to know if there's a book for a later model that drives off the tractor LH wheel. The book I have(TM-17) shows a separate drive wheel mounted to the tool bar.
I have a sprocket that mounts to 4 special wheel lug bolts, but the book I have doesn't show any of that. I have the 'special' lug bolts..

Short answer: Yes, there has to be a later book, or a different one that states "with tractor drive."
Long answer: My December 1957 "Bedders, Planting Attachments, and Lister Planters" parts catalog indicates the "WD" bedder or lister used the separate drive wheel up until July 1951. No. 1 and No. 2 2-row planters used "tractor drive" (sprocket on the rear wheel) effective July 1951. It then also shows a separate drive wheel effective January 1955 on the 2-row listers. It's pretty confusing and I can't tell if AC switched back and forth or if both types of drives were offered as options at the same time.
The No. 1 and No. 2 4-row rear mounted planter appears to have only ever used "tractor drive".
How many rows is yours?

Well,, John,, the book i have shows a 3 row bedder, 2 row planter...my book must be an early one,, only shows a separate drive wheel to run the planter, no mention of a tractor drive.i think this is the I original book that my grandad got with the tractor/planter/combine, that he bought new in 1949....
I got enough parts to build 2-4 row, and several of the belly hitch tool bars,of various widths from the 90" and 120",

I dug through another box of manuals tonight and found "Operating Instructions and Parts Illustrations 2 & 3 Row Bedders & Planting Attachments (For WD, WD45, and D14 Tractors)." It is TM-144 and only shows tractor wheel drive.
Did your grandfather's WD lister/bedder setup not come with the separate wheel drive, even in 1949? Or maybe he bought the lister/bedder a couple of years later? Hard to say for sure based on all of the date breaks in the parts list, though.
Let me know if you need a picture of two of the tractor drive setup sections out of the manual.

 [IMG][/IMG]  John,, the planter I have has this style drive. The book I have doesn't even show the tractor wheel drive, not even in the parts breakdown in the back of the book....??? I've got the #1 planter with the lister bottoms as shown... And, this book is for 2 row planters,,,3 row bedders,, I'm takin a wild a$$ guess that the tractor wheel drive is for planters bigger than the 2 row

Ah, gotcha now. I'm glad to hear you have what you need. Looks like AC did change to tractor wheel drive for even the 2 and 3 row versions at some point (i.e. the manual I have here) but I think the 4 row always had tractor wheel drive from the beginning, whenever that was.
You're going to have to post pictures of that setup when you get the chance!

Well,, trying to kinda get it mocked up for a show Saturday,, prolly won't get all the finer details put together...but,, they'll get the general idea....more than likely it will only be a display piece anyways..
I'm gonna look for that T-144 book...

 This is a 4 row that I've had for a long time,it's jus to wide to haul around. I'm gonna put this snap coupler hitch on it and display with a WD-45.  Ted,, I'm not sure I'm going to Hutch this year,,

Neat! You occasionally see bedding/listing equipment around here, but it's not as common. That 4 row you have still has a lot of original paint on it and will look great at a show. What crops did your grandfather plant with it?

The 4 row came in a deal I traded for long time ago with a WD...
My grandad probably planted mostly milo,higeri, cane type crops,, and believe it or not ,, broom corn, which Union county NM was kinda famous for back in the 50's and early 60's..
